Question
DLG Glider Scratch Build Plans anyone?

Hey does anyone have a link to a DLG scratch build with plans already ? Balsa or Foamie doesn't matter just no composite. There is no way on earth my wife is going to let me cook carbon fiber in the oven.

Lots of entry level plans and kits available. Best to keep 1-1.2m for best compromise of ease of build, cost and performance for first scratch build:
* QFII (Mountain Models kit or free plans
* DL50 (Mountain Models kit) Only foam wing entry kit
* Gambler kit
* HK balsa kit (also prebuilt)
* Drela Apogee and Supergee
* Icarus
* Mimi
* German
* More German
* And

Many many more I do not have bookmarked...

Good place to start is the Mimi semi-solid, or the larger QFII.

Look at the DL50 building technique. It's composite but easily doable at home. It uses WBPU or Minwax Polycrylic if you don't have or don't want to work with epoxy. Instead of vacuum bagging you simply paint on the glass cloth with a brush and then scrape away excess varnish with a piece of plastic (credit card etc.)

Or if you want to try old-school, check out Drela's Apogee instead of the larger SuperGee. The Apogee comes in two versions - composite hotwire cut foam core + fiberglass wing or sanded solid balsa wing. The solid balsa wing uses a special variant of the AG airfoil that was designed to be tolerant to impercise building and has a much flatter trailing edge to aid sanding.

The Apogee was very successful back in the days before DLG (when hand launch meant javelin throws) and was one of the early birds used to experiment with DLG throwing. It's where the venerable AG series airfoils used in most early (and some contemporary) DLGs got its name.

The Mimi is also a good design. It used to win contests when flown against commercially bought DLGs.

Another thing you may want to try if you don't want to invest in a lot of balsa or composites is to build an Alula clone. There are several on here but most don't come with plans (it's a fairly simple planform so you can just use the good old TLAR method).

Here's the build manual for the DL-50 which discusses the brush-on fiberglass technique: http://www.mountainmodels.com/images/manuals/dl50.pdf

Also useful for hints on other building/design techniques.
