Question
DLG High Performance

Hi everyone!

My name is Erik, I'm an aerospace engineering freshman at the University of applied sciences in Stuttgart. I have been learning how to work with all kind of composites in this past few weeks and i have a passion for DLG flying.

I was wondering if anyone has build plans for a high performance 1.5m DLG. My idea was to experiment with the use of some new materials we get from sponsors for the build gliders. More specifically the use of honeycomb sandwiches with ROHACELL and Texalium.

Thank you in advance for your help!

Greets from Germany

Someone can point you to the Zone V2 Tails as well (Maybe Gerald (G_T)?)

For the fuse, there are several ways to go, just depends on preference and needs, I'll let others that have created fuses step in here.

Welocme! Not that I am a builder but I did once ponder the use of texallium. It is a fantastic looking fabric but I was told on here there may be some issues with it and radio interference problems as the aluminum in it makes it conductive. I don't really know as I never tried it, but it would be fantastic if someone could use it. It would make an awesome looking plane.

Hi Erik,

I highly recommend to visit the AkaModell guys at first. Rumor has it that they 're gonna mill a wing plug for a Zone V2 wing the next few weeks.

Seems like you mixed up Texalium with TeXtreme, which is a brand name for spread tow fabric made by Oxeon of Sweden.

Cheers,
Stefan

Hi Eric Welcome to RC Groups

As a matter of fact I have been in the process of milling a Nomex Honeycomb Core for a wing. I am starting with the tail and going to see how that works. I haven't spent any time with the hobby for some time but am trying to get back at it. Made a few test pieces and they look promising.

Very cool AH, any preliminary data on weights for the tails?

Welcome to RCG Eric!
If you need a stiff and lite fuselage, you can find one here: http://www.rcgroups.com/forums/showthread.php?t=2028571

Id like to take at least 20% out, perhaps more.

If someone has some old tail molds they don't use that I could play with to make some test samples and see if it works out id like to get hold of some to play with. This stuff is tough to work with and it takes quite a bit of time so I don't think it would be a marketable item - but for all out performance I think its a leap ahead of foam for a core considering the compressive strength is about double or more. That means the skins can be lighter if I'm thinking this through. I built a test piece some time ago, im at work and when I get home ill try to put up a photo.

ANY PICS OF THIS HONEYCOMB ROHACELL?
THe compressive strength is double in what axis?
I am lost?
Does rohacell come in a honeycomb or is this a machining?

Here you go. Google up Nomex honeycomb and you can see what it is. No Rohacell is not Honeycomb. They are both core materials, Roacell is a foam, core materials all work the same way in composite construction
