I built the Gordon Whitehead DVII for electric power. Made a few changes to save some wieght and it came out at 4lbs. Its a good flyer.

I was very taken with your pictures of Gordon Whitehead's 1/6 scale Fokker DVII which you have built for electric power. As it is a model which has been on my 'must build' list for some time, I have got hold of the plans with a view to doing the same.

In order to lighten the structure for electric power, I am considering the following options - substitute balsa for spruce for longerons and wing spars, lite-ply instead of plywood where possible, reduce sheeting thicknesses (including wing ribs), lightening holes where practicable, and the use of home-made wheels.

I would very interested to hear of any other weight saving measures you might have adopted in order to get the weight down to an impressive 4lbs.

I'd also be interested in the power train chosen.

Construction pics

Mike

Here are some pics I took during the build and the lozenges on the D8 that drove me insane.

Wow that plane looks great! Can you show any details on how you build the ailerons? I'm not sure how to do the hinge area.

Just used small white pinned hinges, you can see the end of one in the picture of the tail unit.I made the hinge line very near the top and angled the leading edge of the aileron accordingly. Also used a hinge slot cutter.

Hope that helps - what is latest on your build?
