micro EDF: need your advices

I'm beginning in micro RC. I'm building actually a RC Peanut Druine Turbulent and my second project is a 18" FW190 D.

But I have another dream :a micro jet, certainly a 50's-60's jet. So, I need a lot of advices.

First: which model ? I found that =

http://www.samsmodels.com/acatalog/c...et-X_kits.html

I love the Venom, I'd like to find a vampire or a meteor. But maybe a delta wing would be more judicious in order to reduce load wing ?

secondly, which EDF ? I'm just at the beginning of the threads about fan, but I have to say that I am a little bit lost ! . So, what would be the good choice ?I want a light but powerfull setup; enough if possible to do others things that circles in the sky. Am I too ambitious ? Are there some fans that work in 1S or the minimum setup is 2S ?

thirdly: I'd like to use a micro retract gear as the one fprovided by Yellow Baron since he made a tri legs retract gear. So, what would be the better scale in order to board all the setup ?

Certainly a lot of questions again, but it's just the beginning

My best adive would get a GP F-86 or the eflight mig15 you can learn how to fly them and gut them when you feel ready to build your own.
If your looking for plans some of use just down size the plans that are on parkjets.com but there are a few that are for 30mm edf like au117 F-35.
The retracts are being worked on my NitroCharged on shapways but they arnt ready yet.

Hello Ror,

Good luck with your micro EDF.... I too like the look of the Venom. Most Jetex or Rapier designs are just a little too small and will need enlarging, say 125%?

Something like this maybe?

Pay particular attention to the ducting. Properly designed ducting is at the heart of any successful edf model.

Thank. But I thing that scale is possible if build very light. Maybe with no retract gear but no more that 18" for a classic wing (venom,vampire...) or 13" for a delta wing.

yes, I'm reading the thread about the 20 mm fan and it's sure that there are a lot of precision to get a good thrust. But I'm here to harvest the maximum of informations.

Hello Ror,

Read this thread
http://www.rcgroups.com/forums/showt...highlight=fj+1

This model is 16.5" wingspan and weighs 87g and the performance is great.

I would suggest that you start with one of the 30mm or 35mm Sabers or Migs. The learning curve on edf is hard enough without adding ultra micro size, scratch building and forget retracts on a 20mm.

Get something that you are going to have success and fun with first. Then start raising the level of difficulty, otherwise you are setting yourself up for a lot of frustration and not much fun.

using the GP sabre fan+motor

8g fan+motor
5g Thunderbird 6 esc (or 6g for Turnigy 6A esc)
13g 200mah 2s (or better 16g 300mah 2s Nanotech)
2g Orange rx
6g (3x2g orange Hobby King servo)
34g Total

http://www3.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin...?&I=LXBPXF&P=Z

Someone measured the thrust (not me) in the Sabre airframe to be around 55g (I think thats at around 3.7A)

If you need more power, the Skyangel 35mm unit can produce 75g thrust in a well ducted airframe, although it weighs 12.5g fan+motor
(at 4.7A)

Dunno.. I have an Aerographics Me 163 16" span, a converted to slope (elevons) Rapier model currently at ~55 gms IMO it would take serious and likely costly effort to get similar weights with a power unit and attendant battery needs .

here is what the stock SkyAngels 35mm fan does...on 3s with a 10amp ESC it puts out close to 6oz of thrust:

M2U01779 (0 min 0 sec)

here is what I used to "make it go":

stock SA fan and motor:http://www.hobbyb.com/skyangel-repla...0mr0ru3e97ejv2http://www.hobbyb.com/skyangel-rc-pl...html?cPath=143
5g servos X 2:http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/s...arehouse_.html
turnigy 10amp ESC:http://www.hobbypartz.com/07e22-proton-10a.html
stock RX for CT6B:http://www.hobbypartz.com/79p-r6b-receiver.html
350-460mah 25-40c:http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/s...Warehouse.html

heres the build thread:http://www.rcgroups.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1765490

also if you want to build a first jet you might give this one a go, the plans are for the "conventional" version, this one also easily flies on a 2s 350mah pack and is so lite with that pack it will take quite a smack with no damage, set your rates for elev to about 40% and the roll to about 55% and it flies like a trainer, after you get the feel of how it flies you can go with a 3s pack and it will go like ticked off hummingbird, build thread: (you'll need to go through this thread to find the 35mm version...which is what the plans are done on ) http://www.rcgroups.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1725467

and a vid with the 350 2s pack:

Xversion3 1YEAH (3 min 1 sec)

In fact, I thought more about a 20 or 25 mm OD fan like the BIM products (I'didn't remenber their name !). are there any others products like that ? is it adapted for a peanut or a wallnut jet ? (I have to forget the retract gerar, I think...)

Hi ror.

I like the kp 24mm fan
http://www.kpaero.com/ProductReport....gory1=electric

However it is suited to 80g models.

I found these plans. I love vampire and swallow (who has a shorter -so lighter - fuselage). Is a 2 or 25 mm fan would be enough ?
