Ready To Transition From A Trainer To Sport/3D Plane Is This A Good One?

I learned to fly on a 57" Apprentice 15e high wing trainer, I'm ready to transition to a sport/3D plane. I like the looks of the 55" Aerosky Extra 330SC: http://www.nitroplanes.com/05a330-red-rtf-nv.html is this too much of a leap or should I consider something else?

Thanks for any input!

I think it really depends on how well you can handle the Apprentice. It basically flies itself whereas the Extra will be a handful, especially for the landings. What radio do you have? Can you set expo?

That 330 would be a handful for sure. I would go with a high wing sport plane or a low wing trainer before that 330.

Your looking at going from a Toyota Camry to an Indy car.

My thought is to use low rates and move the push rods to lowest movement.

Without seeing you fly its hard to access wich plane would be best. Some people have alot faster learning curve than others ( as evidence at my club ). I suggest, get it, dial it back, and stay high until you get comfortable.

By the way, I'm partial to Twisted Hobbys so I can't comment on the plane.

I would suggest that you look for a plane in durable EPP instead if you really want to learn 3D flying.
For example so has Twisted Hobbys planes in many different sizes, colors and shapes.

I would stay away from it unless you're in a club or have a more experienced pilot that could maiden it for you and get it trimmed and flying gently. If this thing is a good bit out of trim on the maiden, and you're only experience is high wing trainer, then this one may get away from you really quick. If you're looking for a plane that size that wouldn't be as radical, you may want to look at something like an Eratix. That one is more like a trainer if you set it up correctly and use low rates.

I have no trainer or Sim when I started; went directly to warbirds (P-51 and AT-6) that almost killed my interests in RC in the first month of flying. And then I got a Cermark Fantasy Racer that saved me from quitting. I actually found big foamie are more stable in the wind and obviously easier to see when you are at10 mistake height. Anyhow, it would save me lots of pains if I knew more about EPP plane back then. My first three EPP 3Ds are from TechOne. I bought them because of the are bigger in size and less skill-required in building. I really like TH's Crack Pitts but my flying field is consistently windy that pushes my 32" EPP all over the place. So now I only fly EPP planes with wingspan greater than 44". My 2 cents is you should consider your flight environment and your skills both in building and flying. Nothing wrong with the Aerosky, but get prepared to feel flying a brick.

Meh, just have someone there thats experienced to maiden it so it can be trimmed and gone threw properly. After that, I'm sure you could handle it. However, it would suck to put all the work involved in getting the plane together just to crash within the first 2 minutes.
