Homemade battery pack voltage?

I made my first homemade battery pack. It's 8 AAA size 650mAh NiMH's. To make sure I didn't fry any cells during soldering I went and bought a digital multimeter from Home Depot. Now I assumed that when I measured the DC voltage of the pack it would be 9.6V (1.2V X 8 cells) except the multimeter is giving me a reading of 11.26V. Did I ruin something on the pack or is my multimeter whacky. Just for some testing I measured the voltage on an alkaline AA (Duracell) and an alkaline 9V (Duracell.) They were 1.44V and 9.44V respectively. If I didn't include enough info let me know.

Thanks for your help in advance..

Nope. Yer ok. A charged cell can read as high as 1.5 volts. Multiply that by eight and you see why you are getting the readings that you are. I expect to see at LEAST 11.5 volts, preferably >12 volts on a charged 8 cell pack.

Thanks for the reply. When I measured the voltage it had also been a couple of hours since the pack finished charging. I had to go buy the multimeter Could the time between the charge and the reading of the voltage have caused the voltage to drop off some?

Yup. They stabilize at a slightly lower voltage.
You're in business, Trig!
