Build Log
HMNZS Moa

Hi all time for another build.

This time I'm setting in to build HMNZS Moa. The decision to build this particular model came about by it being the local navy volunteer reserve ship here in Dunedin . I took a trip as a sea cadet on her when I was only 15 for 3 days and ended up joining the RNZN some two years later. Now several years after leaving what better model to build I thought.

I obtained the pdf set of the plans from the RNZN museum after sending an email through to them. These were printed out to a scale of 1/24.

I decided on the scale of 1/24 for this model to bring it to a size of 1100mm or so. These ships ( which 7 were constructed) were only 27m long would be rather small in any other scale. I also have found that macs mouldings have a subsantial range of 1/24 scale fittings which are perfect for this.

So far I'm at the stage of skinning her frame in 1.5mm ply, later to be fiber glassed. Frames are 6mm marine ply.

For anything I haven't covered please ask away

Nice

Saw this build in the flesh last night at OMES boat group. I also used to see the real thing moored in Otago harbour. Looking forward to this build.

You now nearly have as many started/unfinished projects as I do.

Hi all

The last few weeks I have finished skinning the hull in 1.5mm ply. I took some time to fair the hull also. i used epoxy and mircro balloons(white areas) as well as builders bog(pink areas). more fairing to be done once glassed.

So today as it was a rather warm winters day I fibreglassed 1 side of her in 100grm fibreglass. All going well I will get the second side done tomorrow.

Thoughts have now turned to props, shafts, motors and rudder choices

Great choice of subject; interesting and unique. The hull is coming together nicely too!
