Hanger 9 Funtana 40S + 4130!!

Guys,

Finally getting around to putting my Funtana 40S into the air!! I've fitted a 4130 motor to the plane, see here for the specs...

http://www.rcmdirect.co.uk/store/ind...roducts_id=437

I'm going to be running a Kontronik 55amp ESC together with two 3 cell 3600mah packs in series (6 cells total).

So far I've tried a 14x8 size prop (just about enough ground clearance) and its creating 450w at 22amps - based on this setup it feels like it'll go but I'm after your expert opinions on what I should do to get more power out of this without pushing the hardware to its limits!!

Any ideas?

Here you have the manual.
I have one coming soon, but I'll start learning to fly it as light as possible going with a 3520-7 @ 5S producing ~700W.

Your cells are dropping to 3.4V at only 6C load and I think you'll need a much bigger prop or go to 7S or 8S to get some power out of it.
Looks like your cells are not up to the job on a bigger prop

Cheers,

//Peter

Thanks for your reply! Just a question how do you know my cells are dropping to 3.4v? They're 10C cells so can take up to 36amps - and infact I have 4 of these packs so could parallel and serial them to make 20c and 7200mah?

As for the prop I'm considering a 14x10 or a 15x8 perhaps?

450W and 22A makes 20.45V/6S =3.408V/cell

Ahhhh ok, thats cool - so my batteries aren't up to the job? What would you do/change at this point?

Your biggest problem is your low kv motor and your LiPos not holding voltage very well.
The motor would be much better off with 7S or even 8S if you want to keep the props in the 14x7 range.

If you could break one of your packs up and make a bigger pack it would be a start. If you don't want that a new pack would be the way to go.
Jeff (Vamooska) is selling off 2S2250mAh packs for $18.95 (that's what I'm building my packs from) just PM him for a good deal.

Your post should be in conversions (that's where my Funtana thread are)

Thanks for your help, really appreciate this! Just realised that my first run test was with one flat pack, just redone the test with fully charged packs...

4130 motor, 6cell 3600mah, 14x8 prop
512watts, 23 amps, 21v whilst running

I've turned it vertically and it feels like it can climb out, certainly feels like it'll fly!! Should I perhaps go to a 14x10 or should I stick with the current setup to avoid straining the kit?

Just got discouraged from using too high pitched props. See post in my thread
I think 15x8 would be fine if you can fit it.

Ok will try and get hold of one - does the type of prop make much difference? My local model shop only has the nitro style props which are obviously heavier than electric props, my current readings are via such a prop.

IF I stick with what I currently have, will it fly? and for roughly how long without stressing the lipos?

p.s. Just subscribed to your thread, looking forward to the video! Will be sure to video my maiden too!!

You should ask Carlos (guapoman2000) he has more experience with different props I think.
Using 3000mAh from you pack would give you close to 9 1/2 minutes @WOT based on 23A draw.

It will be a while before I get to maiden mine, haven't received it yet

LOL, bet you can't wait!!!

Think I'll try a 14x10 as ground clearance is an issue, will report back on the difference it makes - bit scared of maidening this beast, its acceleration is quicker than my car on some test taxi'ing today!!!!

Cheers, Ash

Well I'm aiming for the 'good' hehe - gear's all installed now, plane balances almost perfectly on the recommended CoG although the plane (I bought it second hand, never flown) has some CoG marks about an inch forward of the manuals marks, I presume he was going for a very nose heavy install for some reason or another.

Going to maiden with my 14x8 as currently fitted, make sure it at least flies, then go onto a 14x10 perhaps later - what sort of increase could I potentially see by increasing the pitch from x8 to x10? I really can't go another inch diameter as its almost hitting the ground as it is!!

WELL IT FLIES!!! Balanced it central within the suggested range and it took off beautifully with barely any trim needed!! Running the 14x8 its climbout was at around 50 degrees from flat and it felt like it could climb out of sight - it won't quite prop hang but I presume a larger prop will solve that?

Managed a 10 minute flight, one being variable with the throttle, the next on almost full throttle the entire time, and upon charging the batteries they were at 11.2v per 3cell pack so perhaps potential for a few more minutes!!

What sort of increase could I see by going to a 14x10 as ground clearance is an issue - what about perhaps even a 14x12? - I'm limited to 36amps max due to the C rating of the Lipos, but that still gives me an additional 14 amps to play with (via a different prop!).

Took video of the entire event, will put it together and post it here shortly!
