Walkera Devo 6/7e/8/10/12 now compatible with DSM2, DSMX, 28/26/2401, NE J6, Turnigy

It looks like that we have finally got a universal micro heli transmitter! The Deviation firmware 1.0. has just been officially released for the Devo 8/8S and can be downloaded from the following site.

http://www.deviationtx.com/

Apparently Walkera knows about it and is very excited about it themselves. Here is the thread on it at RCG

http://www.rcgroups.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1611471

Congratulations and thanks to PhracturedBlue without whom this firmware would not have been possible..There is also rcH4x0r, MatCat, wusselfuzz, FDR, leloup and others who made this previously unthinkable project possible. They did it out of their own time for free for the community. We should give a special thanks to PhracturedBlue who was responsible for the bulk of the project, without whom this would never have been possible.

I suppose it is a bittersweet moment as well. Now we know that Walkera could have made their Devo transmitters easily compatible with old 2801, 2601, and 2401 standards but they choose purposefully not to.

Just be aware, I only have support for the Devo8 at this point. The Devo10 will be next. The Devo6 and Devo7e are likely contenders. The Devo12 is a much more complicated beast, and adding decent support for it would take a lot of work. I'd love to work on it, but I'm sure the current backlog will keep me busy for a long time. I also don't have a Devo12, and am not sure I want to spend the money for one right now.

We've known that since it was discovered that they use the same RF chip.

Deviation on the Devo 8 supports 12 channels and there's no reason you couldn't control the extra channels using trim switches.

Yes, it was a kick in the groin for all those who had bought their products to suddenly be cut adrift. They could release as many new radios as they want, but abandoning the previous protocol was not necessary.
I like some of their products, just wish they would think more about customers rather than viewing them as an exploitable commodity.
Deviation will do for Walkera similar to what er9x did for flysky... sales galore.

If you have no clue about what to do, just download the manual from deviation site and read it.
If still having difficulty understanding after studying manual, then forget about it and leave the radio as it is.

Amazing news.

I tried on my own to work on devo10 but progress is very slow, I don't have experience with embedded stuff. Once PhracturedBlue (which has much more experience than me) starts working on it maybe I'll be able to lend a hand with general programming.

Congratulations for your effort guys!

I'm watching keenly, as a newbie to this hobby I like the idea of buying a universal tx. The current landscape of manufactuer lock in annoying at best. Best of luck to you.

Does that mean one could make a WK2801 control a devo RX (and switch back again)?

Does it mean I can make my WK2801 fly my mQX?

Or should I just go ahead and get the Devo 10 (or 12) as planned?
