Idea
102 inch foamie EDF - NEW BATTERY SET RUN-IN.

Today I got great idea, I'm sick and tired of waiting last 10 month for the 72 inch "Mig15", it is still not here so I'm going to build instead huge 102 inch foamie powered by 127mm RAMTEC/SCORPION unit running on 12S10000mA. I started with 1/4 size drawing cut out. I will try to keep the AUW below the MOP 7kg limit with 3.5kg of batteries, it should be a great fun build, Joe.

How did your 90mm 12s go fast scratchbuild do?

Curious

This sounds interesting. I would encourage you to quit your job and get to work on this.

Hi 777, to your question, it must be the best flying model I have built up to date. I didn't get a chance to get video yet, been too tight up. I managed 4 flights with it last Sunday at Tingalpa EDF jet meet. I just love it so I have decided to build the larger 127mm version. It will be bit of a challenge to strengthen it with lot of carbon fibre rods which I hide inside triple layers of my 6mm Depron sheeting, Regards Joe. ( I'll do some video soon of my 12S/90mm set up )

I'm well on my way by cutting the first layer of Depron. 6mm carbon fibre tubing and balsa leading and trial edging will give me the stiffness of the air frame, Joe.

This is very awkward job, it is so large that I have to do most of it on the floor. My workbench facility is useless for this size of model. I hope it will fit in my car! Joe.

The hardest job is done so I can start on the fiddly bits and painting. I trimmed the whole frame with 18mm balsa leading edge making it very stiff, Joe.

My foamie is starting to take the shape, more Depron and epoxy added, I'll expect by the time I'm finished I will use 1/2 kg of epoxy and another 1/4 kg wasted while mixing always more then needed. Today I have worked out my CG and decided on position of my power unit and the battery placement before epoxying the main formers to hold the large shroud in place, Joe.

While the massive 127mm Ramtec power unit was screwed into laminated support legs using modified rubber grommets the whole assembly was bonded into my frame with 6deg. upthrust using almost 100 grams of epoxy. Both rails are well anchored some 25mm into the foam base through the 5mm base ply former. The rear of the thrust tube will be also supported to the main body. "CC160" ESC will be placed only 30mm in front of the shroud for optimum cooling, Joe.

The first sparkle of life. My favored colour scheme, dark purple/red and white. The main body is just about ready to fit Elevon controls and made up landing gear. Joe.

More stiffening on the belly which also serves as servo arm guard. Currently I'm making up very simple but strong main landing gear. The whole airframe weighs 2.5kg so I'm on the target< Joe.
