Edbergs modification

Hope I'm not disturbing the high tech ether too much with older stuff.

The following thread is about: Don Edbergs “Sagitta” modification from WC 1981

A member in our club (Per Nyberg) was a participant in Swedish F3B team 1981. Per met the US team member Don Edberg at the WC. With recommendations from Don Per constructed a straight wing Sagitta with carbon reinforcement, geometry like Sagitta 900 wing (constant chord, tapered outer). A glider Per used with great success 1982-83. After a while we had a couple of these gliders in our F3B league.
The modified Sagitta and the following development of similar models based on Don Edberg modification was Sweden's first step towards an international standard. And like others in Sweden by this time, my first own design was based on Sagitta: fuselage, wing joiner etc.

In retrospect the Sagitta mod. from Edberg and of course the Gobbler from Holley was a good answer to the Dassel and other hot gliders from WC 1979. Not molded but robust gliders with a sound geometry. In my opinion Don Edberg's model has not received the publicity it deserves, at least in my area.
It seems to be quite a few facts about this glider published and I would like to now more.
What I found so fare is the following:

Three different names seam to exist:
Sagitta mod.
Sagitta 838
Hustler
Hustler: Foam wings, Modified Sagitta 900 fuselage, airfoil: E205, wing area: 54.45 dm2 (840 sq. in.), weight 1800 g (4 pounds). The wing has aileron and was straight - single tapered. One servo to each aileron. Wing fully sheeted: 1,5 mm balsa (1/16)

I am thankful for all types of information about Don Edbergs 1981 WC glider. My plan is to construct a replica if I get enough information (a friend has the Gobbler kit, have to beat him in 2-lap speed ).

Awesome pictures. I competed in that Team Select with Mark, Don and Alex. Missed the final day by one or two places....

Man...those photos bring back a lot of great memories. When I was 14 my Dad and I went up and spent the day at the WC's in Sacramento. We were just getting started in R/C soaring and I thought Don Edberg and the "Hustler" were the bomb. He was still going to school at Stanford I believe, and was a flying with the South Bay Soaring Society up here in Northern CA. He was also competing in our Northern California Soaring League contests so I would see him and those sailplanes at local events. I still have a bunch of photos taken at Curtis High School in San Jose of Don the the Hustler. The Sagitta 900's had just came out and the Hustler was the sexiest ship I had ever seen. I built 4 Sagitta 900's back in my teens. Two with polyhedral and two flat wing with ailerons. All were red, just like my hero Don's airplanes were. Looking back now you would call in my first "man crush." Very cool airplanes.

Closing in, awesome pictures very helpful, thanks.
Clipped wing was probably 2M version.

Hustler "F3B" version, so fare:
I guess Don used 10 in root chord as Sagitta. If he used Sagitta tip chord,
wingarea should be approx. 850 sq in. if span 100 in. Aspect radio about 11.5.

Curtis sure has shrunk over the years. I was a tad young (1) when those photos were taken. Here's two from last year.
