Were you expecting them to be completely discharged prior to charging?

Neil

How do you know that they were fully discharged at the start of the charge?

If the pack has some residual energy left in it then the charger can only deliver the difference between the cell capacity and the amount of energy already in the pack.

80% of 5300 = 4240 mAh which is the max. you should be using / replacing from them.

They will only deliver 5300 most likely if discharged all the way down to 3V per cell which will cut many cycles from their life each time yo do so.

Neil,
No there is no need to discharge them and recharge them.
BTW you say "4200 each cell". Are you sure you are reading capacity and not cell voltage as the fully charged voltage of each cell is 4.200V.
If there is more than one display showing 4.200, at the same time then almost certainly it is a voltage reading.

Every battery checker I've seen tests voltage. Determining capacity is harder.

If only we had such a thing as a battery checker which actually displayed capacity. That would be sweet.

I use this. It tells the % remaining of your packs as well as individual voltage by cell. My Gens 4s 4000s after a full charge show 99% and 4.21v per cell. This is how i know my packs are in good shape and balancing well. I refuse to lose a 1000 dollar airplane due to poor battery packs and consider it well worth the 30 dollar investment to be able to monitor my pack's health.

I actually have that exact same battery checker. It's good, but like I said would be neat to have something which listed the remaining capacity with really high accuracy to the mah. But electrically that's impossible.
