You may want to give more thought to water ingress - the biggest models put their rails under.

Close the underside of the grating, even sealing that hatch if it isn't needed, if it is needed, but only now-and-then; gasket it and screw it down.

Glazing the windows in the cabin or put an inner sleeve set-up on it a-la the attached. This makes a tall inner coaming that's more secure and water resistant than just the lid coming off.

Ditto the focs'l hatch - if that's a hatch that needs to be opened regularly - otherwise put a gasket on it and screw it down.

Jerry, Many thanks for the pictures. Really helpful! I wondered if I was making the coamings high enuf. The grating has a black piece of ply glued to the underside of the deck to close it off. (supposed to look like water) Am going to take your advice on the other items. Any other suggestions would be welcomed. jda

Tim, Those are not the kit instructions. That's a page out of a book on the restoration of the original boat. jda

Health problems continue..... but am able to spend some time in the shop.
The new sail servos have arrived from China but I am still going to finish up the deck details before attempting the sail controls. This still may be a static model for someones mantle.
The kit provided some balsa parts and a cast metal drum for the anchor winch. I have substituted baswood, cherry and a birch dowel. The metal parts are mostly brass wire, heated cherry red and flattened with a hammer. The holes were drilled with a hand twist drill. All this machinery in my shop and I still like my hand tools! The winch is not finished but parts need painting before final assembly.

In between games, I got a little more paint applied. Haven't glued anything down to the deck as yet. The brass chain will be blackened and the copper covering will be aged a little so it's not so bright. Lots of work in this piece unlike the boxes for the cabins.
