Mustang with 4 blade prop

Just got the 4-blade GWS prop for the P-51. I modified the existing spinner plate to fit.

Motocalc says

GWS "D" gearbox 4 blade 10X8
7.7amps
Static 14oz. (.91%) 3748rpm
Best L/D 7.1oz (.46%) 4212rpm

GWS "C" Gearbox 2 blade 10X8
7.9 amps
Static 11.8oz (77%) 4815rpm
Best L/D 6.9 oz. (.45%) 5065rpm

You get the same amp draw with better climb and vertical maneuvers without sacrificing any top end speed.

BTW - with a miniAC 1215/16, the "C" gear and 4 blade prop you get over 16oz. thrust for unlimited vertical (that's the next step)

Plus it looks INCREDIBLE !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Judge for yourself

Flight tests confirm what Motocalc says. Might even be just a little bit better than Motocalc. Great climb, better vertical and just as fast.

Slows down faster because of all that prop windmilling out there. Easier landings because of the steeper approach.

Here's a more normal shot.

If you are thinking of using the "C" gear with the 4 blade - don't.

It really gets amp hungry at 9 amps and there is NO performance increase.

I'm really having too much fun with my camera.

It looks very good for a GWS. Great work GWS and RMason. How does it handle low speed landings? I know most of the warbirds will just go into a dive or spin.

That's it, I've been thinking about getting a gws P-51 for a while, but this is really great looking.

My LHS just got six of these in stock and I even have a spare "D" box laying around.

Time to go order a propellor and grovel to the wife......but honey, I really need all of these planes....

It flies much better than the Zero.

As long as you don't have more than the recommended elevator throw, it likes low speeds just fine. Keep the CG near the forward part of the range and it is hesitant to tip stall. Doesn't mean it won't if you're careless, but it won't bite you unexpectantly.

Actually it flies like my .60 slimer TF Spitfire come to think of it.

Landing is the trickiest part. I bring it in a little fast and hold it just off the ground to let the speed drop off, and it settles to the ground pretty as it could be. The last part of the rollout is something else, the flimsy gear legs want to fold under with any sideways force and the Mustang ends up on it's nose. Solved that by making my own gear legs.

That's the best looking Mustang I've seen yet, and not just because of the prop. Nicely done!

How come in two of the pictures, it looks like the tail wheel isn't touching the ground?

Looks great with that 4 blade Rob!!...and good paint job on the prop too. I like the specs and performance as you report it from your tests today. I made 4 flights today with the C gear and it was great. I also have the D gear so, I'll get the 4 prop next...

Thanks all for the compliments,

I can't take all the credit, GWS designed a good plane. They took all the complaints from the Zero and made an exceptional plane. If the Me 109 and the Spitfire are of the same caliber I'm in trouble.

Fred - some gear doors are in the planning stages. If I put the Brushless in it, I'm gonna put some retracts on it. If not, then the gear doors will still go on.

Gerry, Carlos - See you Sunday for some great flying.

Rob

Gerry - next time ou go out - give me an E- Mail, It's only 5 min. from my house

Later,

Rob
