For those who want to build or design/build their own, they/we can admire the top boat (bp) and try to emulate it or try to improve on it.

For me i have tried it all...had tony g.'s old italiko and won races with it right off the bat. Then tried designing my own and realized it was more fun and satisfying to sail my own creation. I don't do as well but i'm having more fun. Try it you might like it.

It was the design side of things that first got me interested in R/C yachts.
I had designed boats for fun for many years but costs were one factor that prevented me from building.
All that changed when I found R/C sailing. Here was a way I could design, build and compete against others and if it did'nt work bin it at relatively little cost.
My designs quickly became competative at club and district level. I was allways convinced of the good performance but they lacked a top thumb on the stick.
All that changed when Ken and Trevor Binks had the faith to deviate from the tried and tested boats (they were then sailing TS2s) and I built an Isis for each of them.
As most know they were both top performers at national and international levlel with the Vancouver worlds being the highlight.
I am sure that there are many very capable designs, both boats and sails out there but with top competitors rarely prepared to trust there own instincts as the Binks brothers did then they will continue to sail under the radar.

I bet two V8s with good thumbs at the sticks with my own designed and build Spitfire with beginner thumbs at the sticks in a few races. If did that with a v8/britpop, weres the big victory in that? (opinion)

The big victory would be in doing it consistently in different conditions and on different days. It is my contention that with IOM`s "they all go the same speed" and it is the tuning and the sailing that makes for winners. Having a boat that accelerates out of a tack, points high, foots fast, does not stall, and is balanced so it sails itself, is the secret IMHO. That and the skill to put it in the right place at the right time. Funny thing is, the more I practice, the better I seem to go.

Of course beating someone with 15 years experience is possible. You need 16 years experience to do it though.
