Build Log
Vintage Re Design- Chevron Models Grumman F8F Bearcat

As promised, the start of with the F8F short kit build. First a little about the kit

It was originally offered by Chevron Hobby Products
It was originally intended for nitro power, this will be lighter but still retain the strength to enable gas or nitro power.

Specs
Power .60-.80 or electric
W/S 64"
Length 44 5/8"
Weight(original) 7+ lbs
Projected weight Less

The current weight of the fuse alone is 39.5 oz (lots of excess pu resin)

Time to answer questions.
I'll estimate your cost for hardware and wood to be about $20 + depending on what you choose or already have. The kit will be a short kit of wing cores (eps, or blue as an option). fuse and plans, canopy molded on. you'll need lite ply, balsa sheeting etc.
Construction answers. Essentially this would be considered an advanced kit by most, building with the level of finish scale to be determined by you the builder. I've been asked a few questions so far here are my answers. I'll be looking to others here to help the less experienced, hopefully to kind of turn the thread into an instruction manual.
This thing will absolutely rip, and to my knowledge there isn't anything like it, of this size out there.

Wings,  most just sheet with 3/32 balsa, and glass them, but it's all about your power plant, if you want a ballsy nitro bird, I'd do some obechie ply.
Formers and treys?
You'll need to fab what you want
Tail construction?
The tail is up to you stick or slab the fin

Now the big answer..... Why? Well I put a dumb price on it, and while the fuse itself is usable, its showing its age. I've never seen another one in kit or built form, so it's likely I never would again. Several of you want it, so rather than sell 1 high price tired kit, the galactic overlord, my awesome wife encouraged me to rebuild the kit so we might all enjoy it.

A bit about me. I'm a transplanted California kid, I have an extensive auto body and composite background, and have been a real world TUAV specialist as of late (I dislike the term drone, its inaccurate). I've been involved in general aviation since 1980 and models even earlier as a kid in the 70's. Dad has always been a pilot and A&P. I played with my first fiber glass repairs on his Bell 47 g2 hoppers (he was an ag pilot) when I was 11 or so. I'm a rc sailplane guy as well so, I know how to keep it light. I'm looking forward to this and will be using the cure times to fly my full scale and study for my exams.
Any questions about getting involved will be addressed in the threads below.

And this one is sweet, bigger than a park flyer and small enough to still fit in the car with the wings off.

Ok

Subscribed. Optimistic for a kit to come. Nobody makes an F8F; Thunder Tiger made 'em for a while but then even they went away.

I have a list of molding supplies that needs to be ordered Monday or Tuesday. Some of the first things on the list are sheeting the wing and setting the saddle and filets. Tomorrow though is just preliminary body work with glazing putty. I feel like this will fill a unique niche, let's all hope it's a snag free process.

body work

As I mentioned before, this thing is old, most likely 30+ years. Originally I thought bracing the inside fuse above the wing sadle with lite ply might get me by... not so much. If you examine the photos you'll see the one side sits in too far. I intend to add some glass doublers as stiffening longrons to the inner fuse, this will have the desired effect of reducing the flexibility and will allow me to get a truer surface. I'll just build up the swaled wing saddle with evercote kitty wiskers.
The cowling is a bit on the heavy side, I'm guessing I can cut it in half at least.

Looking good! While you have the putty out, fill the end 3/4" or so of the exhaust duct; what's there now is way too long.

Watching this with sincere interest.

i have a damaged thunder tiger F-8F I was going to make a plug out of it make a mold and offer short kits.i think it is a tad smaller . but if your all ready doing one I may wait for one of your . the F-8F flew really nice .I have a Rare Bear I found and am almost ready to fly it . you will need some sort of hatch if you go electric so you can swap batts.

I say if ya got it.... Fly it! This one is for sure bigger, as far as a hatch goes it's easy enough to cut one where you want it. As for this build, I'm concerned with getting the ripples gone and details right , so we can get the fuses out in time.
Tonight will find me thickening the fuse walls and looking for photo documentation. If you gents have some good detail pics please load them to the thread.
