Was it 1980 when the US beat the Soviets in Olympic Hockey to win the gold.
they called it the "Miracle on Ice"
.
Could this be the "Miracle on Cats"? if Oracle keeps winning over NZ?
Really amazing sports story whatever the outcome.....

30 years ago tomorrow, Australia 2 won the Americas Cup.
First time in 132 years the Cup had been won ,taken and travelled over water since it was the 100 sovereigns cup (mis-named by the yanks as the 100 guinea cup)!
In 1983 the crew of Australia 2 were paid $12Aud a day against the proffesionals at the New York Yacht Club.
Will Jimmy Spit' bring the cup back again?
In any event the boxing kangaroo flag will fly on the Sydney harbour bridge tomorrow, 30 years on!

And I still salute that great victory-I supported the Aussies then unequivocally! I took off work to watch that last Great Race and what a victory it was.......
If the USA (or TNZ) wins it will be a similar Great Race with USA posting the greatest comeback in Americas Cup history.
Good luck to both Teams.......

Wrong Place to be flying the Flag... Should be on the Old Fremantle Traffic Bridge...

Advance (NSW AUS) Lost her way in the Louis Vuitton & never got to Represent Australia or NSW..

So Sydney be Damned.. The Glory goes to WA & Australia as a whole..

John , ha ha !
Family friends sailed on the boats, we had the challenger selection trials here in Melbourne, JB sails from our club and another that was on board aussie 2 , Grant Simmer is now head of Oracle!
Granted Royal Perth (and a great club it is) was the club of convenience!

(to our friends state side, Perth in Western Australia is probably further from the east coast of Australia than the east coast is to New Zealand, but the kiwis all sail! Getting any attention for yachting in Australia is a bonus as not a lot care, a flag on the bridge is more the better!!!
Sailing at the last Olympics was again dominated by the Aussies, didn't get much attention here until the news crews realised our swimming team absolutely bombed out....
got an email about a month ago from one gold medal sailor saying he is job hunting, if his recent gold had been in swimming he would be doing tv commercials and hosting the weather, bah!!! )
what will happen if the cup returns to NZ?

Andrew

Good Call

Might just have to go down & give the Old Girl a pat & a look see..

No doubt lots of media down there tomorrow grabbing a little history ..

I can still remember working occasionally in the Bilge of Black Swan & waving goodbye as they went out every day from the Fishing Boat Harbour on her sea trials & sail testing.

Awesome race. Talk about racing your way out of a corner. I was proud of the fight the USA showed in the face of adversity, and now ecstatic with the win! What a come back!!!

To me it doesn't matter where the sailor's came from, years ago when I spent
23 years racing mono's boat owners would bring out of town "rock stars" to attempt to win races. I just enjoy good racing and speed, haven't been on a mono hull since I got my first cat ride and this was good racing in spite of all the naysayers in the last 3 years!

The Billionaire and the Mechanic

"The Billionaire and the Mechanic: How Larry Ellison and a Car Mechanic Teamed Up to Win Sailing's Greatest Race, The America's Cup"

I think most in this thread will find this a great read. It follows LE from surviving the 1998 Sydney to Hobart to just before this AC series. A lot on how he put together his teams, got the boats built, and had a car mechanic as an indispensible member of his crew.

A good sized excerpt of it here: http://www.amazon.com/The-Billionair...he+billionaire Click on "Look Inside".
