Thoughts Of God Stresses Atheists, Calms Believers

No shockers in this study.

http://www.livescience.com/health/th...line%20Feed%29

To a believer (or at least a Christian one) thoughts of God represent blessed assurance of eternal love, mercy and grace. To an atheist the prospect that there may in fact be a God, and in particular a God of the Bible would mean they were in deep poo, poo.... Unless of they turn to God of course.

The non-existence of God stresses me just as much as no Santa Claus, and the absence of an Easter Bunny,
none.

The same with all the gods, Odin, Thor, etc.

Seems like a study overflowing with Gerin Oil for the masses.

It seems you read quite a bit into that study - since the entire paragraph I bolded is little more than YOUR beliefs - the study came to no such conclusions.

I'm glad you find such comfort in your beliefs - but at least be honest about it. Which you were not in the paragraph above.

Interesting you felt compelled to make things up to support your POV.

From the article....

In contrast, for atheists, thoughts of God may contradict the meaning systems they embrace and thus cause them more distress.
I'd say Ira's opinion and the study came to the same 'conclusion' that in the end, it causes distress.

btw CF your distress is showing and your own post supports the article. LOL

I am also pretty sure that Ira's opinion isn't made up. Any more so than your opinion (of his opinion) is made up to support your POV
It is odd that you felt compelled to do that.

To each their own. I don't buy the article.

I saw a study once that showed 15 year olds who still believed in santa claus existed where happier and calmer than those who didn't.

The ultimate goal of my existence is not to achieve calm. Quite the contrary, the challenge of meeting life as it presents itself, and the stress of confronting your mortality is a positive and good thing. It sure makes you pay attention to what matters--things of this world, rather than imaginary things in an imaginary future.

It's beyond easy for anyone to jump on the Internet and find "an article" that proves or disproves a personal belief system.

The really comical part is when they hold it up to "prove" something - like they discovered a valuable find and they're hoping for confirmation replies, groping for much needed support.

From the Op
"The researchers suggest that for religious people, thinking about God may provide a way of ordering the world and explaining apparently random events and thus reduce their feelings of distress."

In other words... The concept of God brings structure in in chaotic world.

I find it interesting that the responses from those who seem to be atheists sound rather stressed.

Are you able to share a clear example, or just trolling again?

Lets see, a person who believes in god is content; OK. I've always been told there is no man without sin. It would seem to me that christians would be stressing out and anxious about sinning while heaven slips away. If I were a christian, I'd be a mess.

What if I'm an atheist AND I believe in God?

Oh God, I'm sooo confused and stressed.
