Ultra Stick 120

I bought a Ultra stick 120 jwith a Saito 180. What a beast! It has plenty of power but its a fuel sucking pig!!! I get a whopping 7 minutes out of the tank that was installed in it. (I don't know how big it is,, can't see it) Do you experts have any other engine recomendations that will still have verticle performance with better fuel consumption? GAs?

Thanks,

Chris

No expert here but I do know 180's are thirsty. For longer flying time and cheaper fuel go with gas. As much as I fly I couldn't afford glow fuel for a 180.

Hey thanks wcb,,, yea I am thinking gas will be cheaper in the long run. Do they have the power that glow does? So if I get a 1.8 inch gas motor will it perform the same as my 1.8 inch glow? How do you match a gas engine to the plane? It seems that gas engines are MUCH heavier than glow. Do you know a good match for my ultra stick? I am thinking it weighs around 13 lbs.

i think it is the zenoah g26 that goes with the stick 120 , i think it is heavier and might cut down on speed but vertical will still be good , bit pricey but well worth it.

HI RC,,, So I imagine by your post in that the speed might reduce,,, that the rpm is less? With a stick,,, speed is not a requirement but I guess that 3d work is. I like the ability for a plane to hang on the prop and maneuver at slow speeds with the power to pull out.

speed might reduce yes , only because there is less RPM's than lets say a 2 stroke 120 to 160 size but since your runnig a 4 stroke it might be about the same , in general 4 strokes have less rpm than 2 strokes , you might get away with it performing just as well , but gas engines are heavier than glow so youll want to take that into consideration , i think youll enjoy a gasser on your stick , there are a few guys at my club that has those with a gasser and they seem to like it. I'm not sure what size gas engine will make the same power as the Saito 180. Evolution gas engines are light but expensive. I have an Evolution 45cc in a H9 27% Extra and it has gobs of power. Very good engines but they are pricey. Zenoah is a fine engine and reasonably priced but they are heavy. I've heard good things about Brillelli gas engines.

I've got an old G-23 in the Ultra Stick 120, and it is not a vertical machine. It climbs well, but not unlimited. I'm not sure if a newer G-26 would help. The next step, a G-38 would give it unlimited, but would be WAY TOO MUCH for the Ultra Stick.

I had lots of fun with my Ultrastick Lite with a G-26 on it.
Low cost motor - cheap on fuel.

I strengthened firewall (pins and blocks).
Move all weight to tail (battery, tail servos)
Modified elevator (larger movable surface)
Pull-pull on rudder, dual servos for elevator.
Powered by G-26 with $20 after market pipe from http://wackerengines.com/
18x6W APC

AUW was just shy of 10.5 llbs

Vertical pull from hover was very good. I posted video way back when......
