EDF noob

Hi,

I am planning to build the FT Viggen and ordered a 70mm OD edf to suit.

I connected it up and ran for 30 seconds to a minute before I shut down due to scraping sounds. I was at approximately 1/3 throttle.

The following photos show the damage.

So, is this normal ?? Is this part of the running in procedure ?

Run gently until the walls have confirmed with the fan type of thing ??

Thanks

Andrew

Normal? If it' an out runner and the fan and motor are not balanced--yes.

Do some searches on balancing fans-- lots of info here to digest.

Best to check that the fan is in the center of the shroud.
If it is slightly of center then when the fan starts to flex it could touch the shroud.
And of course as already mentioned make sure it ballanced

Thanks for the replies.

I also had a reply from the supplier, "From what you are describing this is normal, as the center fans spin, they heat up and expand. This will make a near perfect fit"

I will look into balancing the fan.

cheers

When you ran the fan were you holding it in your hand? the shroud will deform and rub as you have seen. But many fan can rub like that depending on how they were assembled.

Most definitely wear eye/face protection. If/when it lets go it will be FAST.... guaranteed.

I spun up a fan (30mm dia.) and didn't even get to full power and because the fan was out of balance it let go. The fan vaporized and took out the shroud.
