According to the latest edition of "SAM 35 Speaks," Les Duffy, former Membership Secretary of the organisation, died on 8th December 2013.
I had the pleasure of meeting him twice, combining visits to his home with visiting friends in Devon. On the first occasion, I had advertised a part built Slicker 50 for sale in the pages of SAM Speaks and he contacted me to say that he wanted it. I delivered it to his house and he showed me his model aircraft collection which filled a spare bedroom. I was particularly impressed by EJ Riding's rubber powered BE2c which he had converted to radio control. It was powered by an ED Hunter with a throttle. I never got to see it fly because he had just sold it to someone else.
I visited him the following year and he showed me the completed Slicker which was also fitted with a radio; he told me that it flew well. We found out that we had another hobby in common, the restoration of old cars, I told him that I had just returned from a meeting in Troyes, France in my 1974 P6 Rover. He told me that he'd restored a Rolls Royce.
Even on the first visit it was obvious that he was not in the best of health and on the second occasion he told me that he'd just joined the local rugby club as a social member and the club allowed him and his friends to use their hall in order to fly indoor models.
In the 1940s he worked for Kemp Engines, later K Engines in Gravesend, Kent. I told him that I owned a K Kestrel, a 2cc diesel. He asked me whether it started easily, I replied that mine did; apparently they didn't all start well!
According to the article in SAM 35 Speaks he is survived by his wife Rose-Mae who was both the Secretary and the Treasurer of the Society for several years.
