excuses,excuses,excuses

Well here is my excuse.
Sunday was a long day. I started the day at 5 am to make it to the field to begin Monday's event. I got home after 11:30 pm and had to get up at 5 to make it back to the field on Monday. So I was not able to post a recap of Sunday’s event until tonight. So here goes.

We finished 2 rounds of duration, then went into distance. Because we had 8 volunteers it was decide to complete the distance. 8 new volunteers pushing buttons, for 12 pilots, with an average of approximately 22 laps per heat. The buttons were pushed at least 2112 times to complete 6 rounds of distance. The total for the day was 1 glitch. One of the buttons was defective and had to be wiggled, jiggled, and coerced to work. The volunteer had to stand facing south, with his left arm above his head and his right leg pointed to the east. The old rabbit ear trick for TV. (if you don’t get it you are too young). Finally after 4 tries it began to work. 6 rounds of distance completed it was then time for SPEED. Yeah baby! The winds were up to about 15 mph, huge thermals blowing onto the course at launch. All of the pilots got great times averaging in the low 16s to mid 15s. I believe Tom Keisling had the lowest time with a mid 13. 2 rounds of speed and we were completed for the day. Had a great time at dinner with some of the teams at the Texas Roadhouse BBQ. Best thing was just hanging out with these guys. Loads of fun and a lot of good humor.
A special note was that Saturday we had a Father bring his 14 year old daughter out to watch. They were both excited and asked if they could come back on Sunday. Mike Lee jokingly answered that they were welcome but he would put them to work. Well Sunday about noon they show up with 2 dozen doughnuts and asked what they could do to help. They were quickly given lessons and put to work pushing buttons on base B. They did a great job and thanked us for letting them help. Oh and she has been flying a Gentle Lady for 2 years. We gave them lots of information about the local club and look forward to seeing at the flying field in the future.

Although there was plenty of action on Sunday during the contest. there was even more action afterwards. It seems 2 of the more intelligent locals decide to use the outhouse as a target. This was the out house that is located at the powered field next to where we were working. As the teams were closing down for the night we heard a shot. We looked in the direction and saw the 2 locals using the outhouse as a target. Dave Klein called the police and gave the phone to me. As I was describing the incident to the dispatcher the locals continued firing. The dispatcher said the police were on their way. After 12 shots, we looked down the road and saw 2 police units drive by. Tom Watson got in his car and flagged down the Deputies. The Deputies followed Tom back to the field. we were then treated to an encore performance of a Felony stop in progress. It was great to watch as the punks were told to put their hands over their heads. When they complied they had a hard time keeping their pants up. So much for baggy pants being in fashion.

Film at 11:00

Monday dawned bright and early. Not a cloud in the sky and temps in the low 50s. The task was set to finish duration and then onto SPEED. The teams decide to complete 8 rounds total. This meant 4 rounds of duration today. Off the winch at 08:35 and the struggle was on. All 4 pilots put their planes in the slow cruise mode and just swept the sky for lift. Not all made their times but they sure put their mark on the 100 spot. Round 3 started at 1030 and the air began to bring on inklings of lift. Half way through some were really low on altitude and struggling at the 5 minute mark. The as if by magic they all caught a whisper of lift. It was awesome to watch Tom Kiesling catch a thermal at 100 feet. He stayed with it and climbed to all of 200 feet. This happened while he was at least 4/10 of a mile away. Then to watch as he turned on final and hit the 100 mark. His time? Why 9:59 of course. Round 4 was started and the lift was there, only if you found it. Those that found it were sky high at 5 minutes. Those that didnít struggled. The hero flight of the day was Dan Scegiel. Dan had a great launch right into sink. He struggled but didnít find the lift. At the 7 minute mark he came across the field at 50 feet to setup for landing. Then he found it. The lift was just a bubble. Very small. He turned into it and stayed with it. He never climbed more than 75 feet but at least he was making time. He had just one more turn for the 10 minute mark. But on the downwind turn the lift just let go. Dan had no choice but turn to the tape early. He landed just out of reach of the tape. His time? 9:42. That was a great showing of no matter what donít give up. Had he given up and landed when he first came in, his time would have been in the low 7 minute mark. Dan wasnít one to give up. He kept with it until there was nothing left. Great job Dan.
