The heat shrink struts work great, have found time to get in a couple flights between front passages and the wind dropping below gale force. Still working with C/G, but flies great.

I have a question about the SSX Biplane!

I have just resently purchased the kit. I have built many different types of planes from kits. This will be my first biplane!

I did not do a lot of research on this plane and how it flys!

My question is: Can this bird be built to fly like a trainer? Will it slow down without the tip stall situation being a problem? Also I have a tendency to come in slow on landings. Do you feel this may not be the bird for me?

Any advice and help would be appreciated!

Thanks,
Rob

They will slow down to a walk. They are a very smooth flying airplane, but require a couple of flights to get them setup. After that I can't see much difference between it and the monoplane. Start at the front of this forum and it will lead you through the build.

Cherokee Flyer!

Thank you very much for your input! That's what I wanted to hear about the biplane flight characteristics!

I will certainly be reading through this blog as to the build, and I am pretty sure I will have other questions as I progress with both this build and the SSX Trainer that I also purchased!

Thanks again for the help.

The number of parts look intimidating at first (there are a lot!) but just build it one part at a time and pretty soon it's an airplane. James out did himself on this one. The wings and tail are much alike on both airplanes, the fuselage is where the neat bits are. Wings and tail just fall together. It's worth the work, and if you like to build, fun.

Did you find the SSX forum, it has helpful information too.

Cherokee Flyer,

Yes! I really love to build, and it's really nice to see something you have taken the time to build right and see it fly really great!

I have been to the SSX Trainer build blog and it's going to be a great help also.

My next question would be, will these planes do well on a asphalt runway? I belong to a club and we have a 800 foot asphalt runway! No grass! The City of Mesa will not allow us to fly in our parks!

I can't answer that question as I have only flown them off grass, but I don't think it should make any difference except wing tip wear once in a while!

Question, you mentioned a CA allergy, is that from the odor? They make an odorless CA.

My allergic reaction to CA is the chemicals in the adhesive itself! I have tried the UFO type CA's and with the same results,. Sever rash and breathing problems.

James from Millenium, said to try Phatic adhesives. He said it works well on his laser kits and he said he does use it on his builds. I am going to try it! No problem, I am in no hurry, so using Titebond adhesive will do the job!

Have you tried the wood Gorllia glue, that is what I have been using with good results.

Cherokee Flyer,

Yes I have used Gorilla wood glue,! Like it very much also! I am really in no rush to get these two SSX built, so the slower dry times for me is no issue. With Summer heat moving into Arizona (110 degree) this is when we build!

Cherokee Flyer,

If you would not mind, could I ask you some questions on what motor, ESC, prop, battery, (I have 3s 2200 30c batteries) and servos you used on your SSX Biplane?

Before I purchase any of these items I just want to make sure I am at least in the ball park!

Thank you very much Cherokee, and if anyone else would like to chime in I would appreciate it very much!

Cherokee Flyer,

This is the time of year we do our building! Way to hot to be out in this heat right. They say possible 115 today: good building day!
