Kontronik motor starts backwards or stutters and then runs normally

Hi

I have a brand new Kontronik 500 series motor and with gearbox that often stutters or initially runs backwards on startup. After a short delay it runs properly in the correct direction.

It does this with both a Castle Creations ICELITE 100 and a Hyperion Atlas 90A ESC. I have also tried it with several batteries. The wiring is all good with no shorts etc.

Any ideas?

Cheers

Welcome to the forum!

You are probably observing the ESC's initialization routine. It needs to pulse the motor in a set pattern in order to determine the right timing to get the motor spinning. Once the motor is going, the ESC can monitor back EMF in order to determine the timing for normal operation.

I have a Hobby Wing ESC with a nice, linear throttle curve, and it will do a lot of hunting and stuttering at very low throttle settings until its going at least 20-30 rpm.

Sometimes a motor will do that stuttering thing because of the prop being a load that it couldn't push through the magnetic fields at first, so it bounces back. Then the ESC sees it is going the wrong direction on the bounce back and reverses it again to get it going the right direction. On the next try the prop has sort of like a running start and then it carries through the slightly opposing magnetic field and starts. And the gear box might be contributing something to that too.

A possible solution might be a "harder" start when it applies more current to the starting forces. According to the manual for the Pheonix ESC's you choices are Very Soft, Soft, or Fast start and Soft is the default. So trying the other start settings may change things. I'd think the Fast start might be the one that would help but I would try them both to see the effect.

Thanks guys, but I have tried most of what you say. The crazy is that it does what you say only if the brake is set to disabled. If I set the brake, say to 'Soft', it changes the startup operation. If I set the brake to 'Hard' it's worse.

If the brake is disabled I can run the motor smoothly from low speed up to whatever speed I like. I do see some occasional juddering when it sorts out the direction but that is manageable.

If the brake setting is enabled then on most startups there is a very violent 'snatch'. I don't see any slow speed movement, just a vicious snatch to a high speed which can't be doing the motor or the ESC any good at all.

The first question has to be why does setting a brake value affect the start up at all, since it is only supposed to be effective on power off.

Beats me....
