Hey guys I see some of you cut tubing and make your own portholes I have a tubing cutter but it isn't suitable for cutting small rings. I am just wondering what you guys use.

http://www.micromark.com/tube-cutting-plier,10220.html is one option, but something like this could be made at home.. I had many to cut for a project and put a cut off disc on my harbor freight minni cut off saw.. it worked great..

I usually secure the piece in the panavise, then cut with the jeweler's saw.

Or turn your portholes on a lathe!

I would love to have a lathe but the cheapest one I have found is 600 and that's a bit much for me at the moment. I am hoping once I get to the ship I can talk to the mr's and get access to the machine shop there.

get a drill bit that fits snugly inside the brass tube and use that as a mandrel to prevent crushing with a conventional tubing cutter.

I use this with styrene tubing to make my portholes.

That's the way I do it, too.

I picked up one of these with a 20% coupon

Can get pretty thin just have to de-burr once done.

Only limitation is the built in vise is good for a max of ~3/4 inch

I have run the crap out of mine with no problems, I did do a bit of filing and cleaning up to make the vise section a little tighter.. when cutting small brass rings the saw blade was replaced with a cut of disc(micromark) about 50 of two different diameters were needed.. had to rig a box around the cutting area to stop the rings from flying away..

Tghsmith, I also have had mine for many years, bought three extra blades and have never had to change it yet. The box is a great idea, I have been just chasing parts all over the bench. I am going to go out right now and design something. jerryj98501
