A gentle suggestion: you might buy a hex driver to tighten those nuts. Pliers are okay -- until you've rounded the nut.

take a few minutes after a few flights, take off the blades, then check to make sure the feathering shaft screws are still snug . only takes a few minutes to do it...i do this often if i'm not able to fly, and just want to piddle with the Heli's |

There's a cheap set of tools at Harbor Freight that has 3 small nut drivers in it. Sitting here I can't remember which common size nut one of them fits. Hmmm, I think there's a 4mm and a 5mm driver; 4mm fits a M2 nut, doesn't it? Don't remember the 3rd size -- it's either 3mm or 6mm.
I actually spent some time on my build this weekend. Motor and electronics are in! Next step will be the smoke test (first power-up). Then set the ESC and the gyro up. At my rate, I might maiden it this year! ![]() Dave |

I'm one step behind you! I just finished the frame and my next step is to install the servos...this bird has gone together faster than I expected, although if I don't decide on a gyro/tail servo setup soon, I'm going to hit a brick wall... Get that thing in the sky, Hancock!

Crashed one of my 500's again the other day!
Inverted piro orientation exercise. Was doing just fine til I thought about it, then WHAM! LOL! Oh well, first crash in a couple of months. Think I'll start tearing it down and working on a parts list tomorrow. Fred |

Seems like most us 500 trainees have flown away - found a new hobby - crashed and burned - left the wreckage behind - given up - gone into hibernation. This part of the world, the weather man pushing the rain-cold-wind buttons and probably falling asleep on them. How about some updates? How everyone doing? Anybody know of a 747 hangar not being used? The withdrawal symptoms starting to get bad. Am I the only one left in this thread who still trying to learn non-3D flying - or at least trying to learn non-3D flying?

We're here... Same weather problem. Huricane Ida's remnants have been here yesterday and today. Looks nice for the weekend though.
I have my 500ESP Flying very nice. I. move the collective servo's balls out, increased my AFRs and put it on high timing. It really flys nice now. |

There's been a number of good flying days here in the Dallas area of late, but it seems my schedule prevents me from taking advantage of 'em most of the time. I'm not a fan of Daylight Saving Time, but it was nice to have time after work to go to the renegade field near my home once in a while. Now it's almost sunset if I can get over there, and the mosquitos are already active.
![]() I did get out yesterday to the club field. Winds were a bit higher than predicted, but I flew my foamie plane and also hovered my 450. No crashes! Took my 500 to the LHS for their heli guru to bless. He gave it a fairly clean bill of health, then took it out to the parking lot and did an initial test hover. So the bird has maidened, just not with me at the controls. My turn comes soon, I hope! Oh, I wanted to say something about balance. I'm using the Turnigy 3AH batteries, and I have the ESC under the battery tray. I still have to move the battery forward on the tray to get the bird's CG right! If you're using smaller batts, and put the ESC on the side, how do you balance it? Dave |

Sorry to hear about the crash, Fred and glad to hear you got her together, Dave! I told you that you'd beat me...I'm still here too, but not with a flyable 500 yet. I've built up most of the bird except I'm driving myself freakin' crazy over what gyro to get...
I don't want to get the DS760 or GY520 because their software is not compatible with Mac, which is all I use. So now, I'm down to the good old Align GP750+DS520 or JR770/370+DS3500. I'm leaning towards the JR again, except that most things I've read say that it's tricky to set up compared to the 750. I wonder how much I'd notice the difference between the 750 and 770 or 370. Most say I will NEVER notice...others say it will be readily apparent even just during hover. Bah...I need to break down and buy a gyro soon or I'm going to pull my hair out! ![]() Cheers, -->Justin |

Swamped with work, Wx uncooperative too. Did manage to fly my Logo 10 once today. First time in weeks. The 500 hasn't been flown in 3 weeks or more. It flies well but the noise and headspeed are still intimidating and so the cyclic is more sensitive than I'm used to. Have you considered one of the smaller indoor helicopters ? Last October I got a Hirobo Quark and it has been great with indoors orientation practice. I honestly think I've progressed more last Winter than I have in the last three years of flying outdoors once or twice a month. I also got a Walkera 4#3B which is also a lot of fun and good practice. The new Blade MSR is getting good reviews as an indoor helicopter. An indoors heli can really satisfy the craving to fly when it's nasty outdoors or dark. It's not as great as a larger heli outdoors, but it helps. |

I've got 2 770's. I liked my first one so much I bought another one with my second 500. I've heard all that hooey about how tricky they are to set up. I'm here to tell you it's just not true. They're not any trickier to set up thay ANY other gyro. And about their hold, I fly fast reverse with mine and even do tail-slide loops without the tail blowing out. It doesn't get much better than that, especially for the price. Fred |

Justin,
Sounds like you are prone to the same malady I carry -- the paralysis of analysis. In the case of gyros for the 500 I fell back on the fact that I didn't have much money, so a used GY401 was pretty much the only choice. I suspect any of the ones you've mentioned will at least do OK, and probably will be better than that. You're leaning toward JR already, and Fred likes 'em. Go for it! Dave |
