F4 after burner

Well folks I was unsatisfied with the stock plastic after burner cone on my fms f4 . So I cut it off ,removed the plastic turkey feathers and sanded the trailing edge to a fine edge instead of the stock square edge .Then using some stainless steel .005 sheet , got the basic shape cut out preburned with a propane torch and this is the end result .. Also I changed the thrust angle downward to prevent ballooning on acceleration ala Gdimonte mod ..

This is practise for my Eflite f4 when I build it . On the next cone I'll put a band of black stainless around the foam before gluing on the tailfeathers .Stainless sheet colours up real nice with a torch .Any comments welcome ..

Looks fantastic!
The color you were able to obtain with the torch is very realistic!

Hey Pencon did you use rubber cement to attach the S S to the foam?
I like your Idea, I'd rather burn some metal before I tried to paint the foam..
P.S. Ivan here's the pictures I told you I'd send

Xflfun , yes 3m77 works great for attaching sheet metal to foam , both wings and the underside of the tail area are covered with .005 aluminum sheet as well . I painted the cone black before applying the stainless but the only paint I had was attacking the foam so a barrier of 3m 77 solved the problem .

Well , I liked the result on the stainless turkey feathers so I decided to peel off the aluminum from the underside of the tail and go stainless there too

Nice metal work!! I will look great on the Eflite F-4 also,

Here is what I did on my Starmax with my custom made nose and corrected angle tail. The light’s also show up well during the day. The 3rd flight before paint I found out the CG was a little far back and on a low speed turn it nosed up and thud. I was a minor fix and it’s ready again with paint.

Starmax F 4 90mm 3rd flight (3 min 28 sec)

I used Hobbypartz strip LED’s tied to a brushed ESC in the exhaust cones. The strips are set for 12V but they can be separated and use 5V servo power for other areas. Cheap and easy.

If anybody's curious about weight gain Here's the stock plastic tail feathers which I removed at 3.3 grams or .115 of an oz . And the stainless piece equivalent size needed to make a cone at 4.2Grams or .145 of an oz . Plus I would need to cut some stainless away to make the individual strakes .So really there's no down side to the tailcones for weight .
