AlceOSD - Graphical OSD for APM/PX4 (mavlink)

Hi,
I'm working on developing a new OSD for APM/PX4.
I've started the project a few months ago and after a forced pause, I'm resuming the work.

I quickly created a google sites webpage at http://alceosd.dyndns.org/ where I'm gathering all related info.

The project is still in an early stage.
For now, don't ask for schematics, source code or any technical information.
I plan release everything as open-source when the time comes.

As of today, PCB version 0v1 is ready for flight testing!

Since this will be an open source project, all kind of contributors are welcome!

Let me know your thoughts and new ideas for the OSD!

How do we lay out the various data fields? Or can we use the config files generated using the MinimOSD-Extra config tool?

Thanks, looks great.

At this moment the information is directly configured in the source code.
In the future I would like to have a configuration tool.

Done the first flight with AlceOSD today:
AlceOSD 0v1 (1 min 54 sec)

It was a bit windy and the weather didn't help as it was cloudy.
My capture card is a bit crappy so the recording quality is not that good.
I've done some FPV and using my goggles it felt great! Can't even be compared to minimosd!

Next steps is to add more information and a way to switch between different pages of information.

I really missed not having the home direction arrow (or radar) so I think I'll start adding that first!

It seems your horizon indicator is swapped horizontally (it is displayed as a mirror of the real horizon). Good job though, will be following this closely!

I've been posting news in the website: http://alceosd.dyndns.org/news

Today I was able to do a quick flight.
It was windy and my video reception was a piece of crap.

The radar shows the home and take off direction, meaning that if you takeoff in the same direction as the actual landing field, it will feel like if you have an imaginary landing spot (ILS) in the radar.

Here is the video:
AlceOSD - Firmware 0v2 (2 min 37 sec)

Hopefully the people that will get a board soon can post better quality videos than me

Thats right, in the last video I already fixed that
I've also increased the brightness (its a config option).

Finally a decent recording (and the weather helped, although some wind gusts)!
Here is the latest flight:
AlceOSD pre-0v3 - Full Flight (better resolution) (19 min 44 sec)

It's a full flight recording (from power up to landing) so some parts might be boring.

You'l notice that it took some time to get "home lock".
The home lock is completed when:
- GPS has at least 2d fix - 'F' leter in the OSD
- GPS position doesn't change more than 1meter in the home lock timer (15 sec in my setup) - 'P' letter in OSD
- Altitude doesn't change more than 1 meter in the same timer inverval - 'A' letter in the OSD

The radar in my "main" tab is seen as plain point of view (you will see the home location and launch direction as if you were on the plane)
The big radar in my second tab is from home point of view (you can see the plane location from your launch spot facing north).
There is another mode for the widget which is home point of view, facing the launch direction (useful if you want to keep the plane in front of your directional antenna)

More to come...

Great work Luis I am liking your project a great deal, I have a backup MinimOSD unit that will be a good candidate to try your firmware. You say more to come is it worth me waiting a while to see where you are taking it next? As I don't have a spare channel on my RX is it possible to switch screens in flight using the Mode switch as in MinimOsd Extra?

Thanks Bill

Hi Bill,

This project has nothing to do with MinimOSD. You can't use this firmware on minimosd hardware.

Regards,
Luis

I'm now working on hw revision 0v2 (smaller board, improved video circuitry, ...).

I'm not 100% sure but I would like to have mass production going on in about 3 or 4 months.
If you don't want to wait that long, you can always get a prototype board
