Question
Anyone ever cover the bottom of a MiniMax's wings?

I tried this with my Tigetmoth once, and did fly faster and more agile, but it became underpowered with the stock DX-A. Now that I've got my MiniMax, with a little more power, I was considering trying it again, but I'd like to hear from someone else who's tried it.

Thanks for the help,
Keith

Spaulding has...

So Slow,

Look at the bottom post on this page for more info. My gearbox is giving me fits so I haven't tried it yet. Spaulding says it really speeded things up.

I DID IT!

I covered the bottom of a spare wing set with Aluminum Foil today. I just got it as tight as I could and overlapped the top of the wing about 1" all around. I didn't have much cling so I just taped the edges to the top of the wing.

Flight test...

Had to retrim abit of up but she flew away nicely.
Didn't note any major speed increase but felt it flew a bit faster..maybe 25% in dives and 10% in level flight. Turns were crisper with no washout. Loops were tighter. Was able to do a 3/4 outside loop and pull off a 1/2 rudder roll from inverted.
It's makes a quicker nimbler plane w/o sacrificing the forgiviness that all Mini Max pilots have grown to love.

This was will an 8cell pack. Your mileage may vary.

Hey tigger, sounds fun. If the damned weather would ever clear up here, I'll try it. I'm probably going to use Reynolds Wrap. Could you pull off any inverted flight?

Inverted Mini Max

Keith,

I was able to fly inverted and actually rudder roll upright. Without the mod I always had to perform the deadly inverted half loop to get level. Removing the camber of the airfoil definitely makes inverted flight a little safer.

P.S. Please give yourself at least 100' of altitude before trying this.

"Did you really use Aluminum Foil?"

Yep. Seemed to work fine.

I thought people were using plastic wrap to cover their wings... but I guess aluminum foil isn't all that heavy.
Glad to hear it works!

Aluminum Wing Cover

On a sunny day it really makes the plane shine!

That's a spare wing so I can go stock in seconds.

Mini-Max to Crazy Max upgrade

You could always buy the Craxy-Max wing and another servo...

$12 at Hobby-people.net. You'd probably need a larger motor, Graupner Speed 300 (370 type motor) fits the stock gearbox.

3m-77 thinned with naptha and painted on with a q-tip will glue reynold's wrap extremely well... The stuff also shrinks with a hairdryer...
