Skunked at Fermin due to F3F...AGAIN!

Looks like a great day to fly....
Charge up the batteries...
load the planes in the truck...
drive the thirty miles down to Point Fermin...
the flags are flying nicely along the way...getting excited...
driving down Gaffey Street....wind's blowing good...
deciding which plane to toss off the cliff first...
rounding the corner and looking to park...
OH DAMN!...THEY'RE RACING F3F AGAIN
I drove all the way down to Fermin and got skunked.
It just doesn't seem fair that a public park gets closed to me just because I don't want to race...
To me, that kind of flying is as boring as watching grass grow!
Do you guys have a schedule of some kind that I can refer to so days like this don't get me all ?

That's life.Same as surfer not being able to paddle out because of a comp, or parkflyer having to miss out because of a family having a picnic. Too bad. There's always next time. maybe put yourself in the racer's shoes. They got just as much right to be there as anyone so why should they miss out?

Well, perhaps it would be better to help out and join the event, than to sit on the sideline and sulk.

Yeah, It sucks. A least the socal coast it loaded with flying sites. I would of headed up to Bluff and swapped paint with Ian and Russ. The F3F guys are usually out by 4 and there should of been plenty of good air after that.

It's not too often, but sometimes they reserve the park for car shows or food fairs. Sometimes we just have to move along.

Robb and fellow slopers...

SCSR understands that from time to time there will be occasions where sport flyers
will show up at a venue and find an F3F race in progress. We as a group also have
made it known in the past that if the scenario arises, we are more than happy to take
a break to allow the sport flyers to fly as well. We will never shut down the hill or tell
anyone they can't fly! Our competitions are flown in rounds and the rounds usually last
about 20 minutes or so. We will complete our round in progress and then "break" as
needed for others to fly.

We were not aware that you were there yesterday and the last thing we want is for
anyone to drive a considerable distance and not do what they enjoy. All we ask is that
you grab one of us, let us know you're there and we will be more than happy to take
a break. Yes, we are usually done by about 4pm or so, but as stated, we will simply
never ask that you wait until we are done. You have just as much right to fly as we do.

With regards to your comment "To me, that kind of flying is as boring as watching grass grow!",
you are entitled to your opinion and we respect that. Having been a former PSS guy in the past,
I choose to race rather than sport fly. It doesn't mean I find PSS boring, it's just what I choose to
do. No hard feelings!

PLEASE in the future, just let us know you're there and we can share the hill, no harm done
and everyone goes home having done what they like to do. Heck, if you feel like you want to
join in for a round or two, we welcome that as well.

Fair enough?

Regards,

Brandon

Some time ago, I showed up at Fermin only to realize with dismay that a race was going on. I was bummed out, but unloaded my PSSers and sport planes anyway, figuring that I would just wait until the race was over. While I was setting my stuff on the grass, one of the guys walked over and asked me not to fly while the race was going on (I would never have done that anyway!), but then told me that the current heat would be done shortly. I was more than welcome to fly at that point before they started the next heat, just let them know my intentions. He actually started telling the race pilots that another flyer had shown up and wanted some air time. I found that everybody was very accommodating and there was no sense that I was "intruding" on their races. I flew for a bit, landed, and watched the rest of the races before flying again. Several guys kept asking me if I wanted to fly again between the next heats, but I was so impressed with everyone's politeness that I declined and let them continue on. I actually learned a lot just by watching these guys fly! It didn't take long for the entire race to be over, and I had the whole place to myself.

So, I guess the moral of the story is to make your presence known (like Brandon said). The racers are pilots just like everybody else, and don't want to hog the entire slope all day long.

That would be fine if I were even remotely interested in racing...but I'm not...so I won't. And I don't sit on the sidelines sulking either. I bring my dog and he loves it when there's race or the park is closed for some reason. It means he gets to go for a longer walk on the beach!

Thanks Brandon. I know that you are one of the many good guys on the cliff. But a few years ago, the racers "let" me fly for like 15 mins with a bunch of foamies, and other mismatched planes. It was like total mayhem...and that was before someone shot me down. You guys don't race all that often and my dog loves cruising the tide pools. It's still a bummer, but like "Ralphinator Pilot" says,
"gotta just move along"...and go to Pina's Mexican Food for some fajitas and deep fried ice cream!

Robb,

No worries at all, we will make sure that in the future you can and will get your air time if this should happen again. Thank you for bringing your concerns to our
attention....

Brandon
