Phoenix Model Extra 300s

I could not find a thread on the recent Phoenix Extra 300s and thought i would start one.

I Just got the Phoenix Extra 300s in the mail today. Like all other Phoenix planes I have seen, the quality is impressive.

I can't wait to get started on it but first I need to finish my Mini Pulse.

I had my eye on the Phoenix Extra as well. Thanks for sharing and look forward to more potential pics / updates on your build.

Like almost everything about this plane. If it had an airfoiled horizontal stablizer, it would already be on my shelf.

Still on the fence but who knows what will come up on this thread.

I was impressed with the quality of the Phoenix models after seeing my dad's Extra 300. His came out tail heavy and had to add quite a bit of lead to the nose. But he is running an Emax BL3526/04 with 4s. I plan to use Emax GT4020/07 with 5s and I don't expect to have the same balancing problems.

His Extra seems to fly as expected. It is not a 3D plane but it also is not a light easy flyer such as the Pulse.

So far i have only taken mine out of the box and looked it over. The wings do not mount flush with the fuselage but are recessed in a saddle. It makes for a very nice finish but a little work cutting the covering and ironing around the opening. Not a big deal but does look great when done.

Agree on Phoenix ARF quality. A bit heavy but well built, specially considering the Tower's prices.

At $129 less the usual tower discounts and free shipping....wow!

Their Tucano 46 is a beauty too.

The Extra is coming together nicely. Very straight forward build and no issues so far.

Looks great! These Phoenix planes are fun to assemble. Very nice fit/finish with just the occasional challenge to keep it interesting.

Thanks for taking the time to share this with us. I've not assembled a Phoenix offering as yet so this will give me some inside on the quality.
Thanks again.

Happy to hear you appreciate the info. I also welcome other Phoenix Extra 300s owners to share some of their experiences on this thread as well.

From my understanding all the Phoenix models are of the same quality and similar builds. I was inspired to build the Extra from Dave's Giles 202 and his build thread at:

The finished product.... I went with Hanger 9 - 3" wheels and Great Planes E-Spinner. Since will be flying off grass, I chose not to use the smaller wheels and wheel pants.

AUW comes out to 6.50 lbs (2,950g) but is tail heavy. It appears I will need to add 3oz (84g) to the nose to balance at the recommended CG.

How have other phoenix planes been when it comes to the CG? Anyone else have to add lead to get them to balance?

Unfortunately, it's hard to predict balance with these planes. I've tried to achieve CG w/o added weight by adjusting motor/battery size and positioning. Usually, but not always, successful with this. I've had to add weight with some of them.

You might well find, after the maiden, that you can remove some weight and move the CG back some. Most Phoenix CG recommendations are well forward. I'm flying most of them behind recommend CG.
