Creating some junk...
After some time of simply building nothing,
I recently stumbled across that new topic in a new forum:
Somehow I felt inspired...
And I remembered my interest in ´chinese´ junks 30 years ago...
Why is it called "junk" at all?
Was it intended at an invalidation of this type of boats/ships in the first place?
Now what type of "junk" do I want to create?
RC? - Definitely, yes.
About 2 meters long and about 0.5 meters wide...
In other words that would be about 78"-80" long and about 20" wide.
A lot of room/ volume to play with...
If I plan it for a scale of 1/16 a 2 meter model would represent a ship of 32 meters LOA and 8 meters hullwidth.
Three masts with three typical ´dragon-wing´ shaped junk sails.
Two Graupner 6306 Speed 700 BB with 50mm folding props.
That´s the rough concept I have for now.
Some quite ´crazy´ ideas about useable/appropriate building techniques and materials came to my mind.
And to give that whole thing some kind of ´face´:
More to come...

I need another plan!
By now I´ve bought 3 different books about junks and
I have building plans of 4 different junkmodels.
However, I would like to build a Hongkong-Junk!
One of the ships which is still actually sailing there.
Something like this:
The last two pics are called wall tatoo...found on ebay...

Yes, lots of variations to be found from this side of the pond but if I were to build another it would be the crooked stern or a big eyed chicken junk.

Right now I´m tending more to something like this:

Thousand thanks for that, Herrmill!
Saved about a hundred pics on my PC today.
The two pics below for example come from the french link.
Hey, Hermill -
I just found your build log of your own ´junk-project´ again:
What happened to it?
Did you ever complete and/or sail it?
Any pics of the completed boat on the water?
And I also believe I found a new favourite with that today:

Foam plug is nearing completion!
After some time of ´one step forward two steps back´ I became more serious about building my ´Great Junk´.
So I started cutting the 10cm thick styrodur foam blocks, glued them together with doublesided selfadhesive tape and started sanding.

Sits securely on the shelf - creating some dust...
I found this junk more interesting, ´cause it can be more of the ´plug and play´ style I like.
And as soon as I found out how this new digital camera works, you´ll see pics too...
Don´t get confused - there are two ways his name is written - Chengho or Zheng-He - but it´s the same chinese admiral of the 15th century.

More pics to show you my concept.
My own - yet unstarted and unpainted - Trumpeter kit.
I will use it to try out paint schemes.
Now the Chengho ship has a l/w ratio of 2.5/1 - a very wide hull.
My ´medium´ hull has a l/w ratio of 3/1 - like today´s sailyachts usually have.
My big hull has a l/w ratio of 4/1 - quite a slim hull therefore.
The last three pics show the plugs leaning against my livingroom door,
to give you a better idea of their size + the only rough scetches I made to build these plugs.
It´s a very simple transversal shape, basically a trapeze with rounded corners.
Tomorrow I probably will cut the keel rocker/keel line and round the edges between hull sides and bottom.
You may wonder why I want to build such big models.
Well, I assume non of us has ever sailed a chinese junk -
none of us knows how good a junk sails upwind or how it behaves in general.
And the bigger the model is, the better you can watch it´s behaviour.
And Tim Bowman - I simply want to know how good an european galeon sails against some chinese junk - so I complete the junk first and then probably go back on building my pirate ship...
