DHC-4 caribou 1800mm epp

have always had a thing for the caribou.. was the aircraft i wanted to fly when i was looking at joining the RAAF quite a few years ago now.. and seeing how well my 1800mm epp models are flying so far, i thought i would try my hand at this epic plane. .

here are the specs and other predictions of other specs:

wingspan - 1800mm
AUW - 2.7kg - 3.1kg

motor- x2 NTM 35-48 900kv outrunner
prop - 3 blade 10x7 (pusher and standard)
esc - turnigy plush 60amp
retracts - 5kg with 5mm pin
wheels - scale sized light foam from HK
servo - hk15148b 2.8kg servos all round (aileron, rudder, elevator, flaps)

flaps - fowler style (same as on my 1800mm a-10)

the retracts should also be supported by gear doors.

planning on installing nav and landing lights once the test flights are done.

planning on building this along side the p3c orion i will also have going when i get back from my eu holiday. parts and foam are waiting for me when i get back

DHC-4 Caribou you say?
Then you should watch this documentary: NOVA: B-29 Frozen in Time
Plenty of flying and landing footage of the Caribou - check from 12:00 for its incredible endurance.

haha ok well its a 1977 skylane 2 cessna.. its a beautiful plane to fly and they've got me checking rivers and creeks and cattle around the station which is one of the largest in australia.. 2.3 millon acres. lol its great fun. we've got two runways at the station which are like a cross (36/18, 27/09) so im landing almost always into wind. hehe i must say though aircraft out here are no where near as respected as they are on the coast. they treat them the same as a ute or pick-up truck.. "get in and go!" lol not really my style but its still an experience.

the beamer is a 1989 525 which i got to pass the time on my days off, as it is 150km to the nearest town.. 6 cyl rwd which is perfect for dirt drifting. i love it.. hehe i kinda turned it into a bit of an outback racer.. took of the exhaust about halfway up the chasis.. man is it loud now. kinda sounds like a race car.. :-P
we used a road grater to make the track which is about 1km long.. full of twists and turns its perfect for drifting but i designed it so one can bypass the hairpins as well.

however now ive decided to get back into the epp building ill be full on finding some time where i dont have anything to do now!

2.3 millon acres, I had to convert that to dimensions I understand. Turns out to be the surface of Belgium and Luxembourg combined if I am not misunderstanding? Make sure you do that pre-flight very rigorously, and stay high up all the time (if possible) in case of a mishap, because you are a loooong way from home.
(Makes me think: do you outback pilots cary any kind of survival kits?)

Kudos on the Beamer, those 6 cylinder ones have lots of torque and indeed, with half the exhaust they sound the best.
I can only imagine how this sounds, driving at night for a beer run 150km down the road...

Please tell us you have a blog, if not you really should start one!

i was certain i replied to the previous msg however it seems i was mistaken.. oh well thanks all the same. haha i think you may be right regarding the size of the station. i had to put it into some kind of perspective for myself as well.. turns out it has the same area as Cyprus. lol

anyways, more on the caribou as i finally mustered the drive and motivation to get stuck into it today. proud to say the the tail and fuse are ready to receive electronics.

did a bit of work on the wings, basic shaping and got the gull wing profile sorted. just need to smooth the chamfers with the iron and then they'll be ready as well. didnt get to the cowlings yet. have some pics of the progress to date. cant wait to work on the scale flaps for this bad boy!

No worries, I don't expect a reply everytime I post something.

My calculations must have been off, as Cyprus seems to be a lot smaller than Belgium/Luxembourg combined.
Still a lot of ground to cover though.
Must be a drag, flying to Cyprus every day just to check some cattle

Enough off topic, I'm waiting for more on the Caribou.
