You would do well to learn from the DIY Drones guys' work.

Of that I have no doubt, however it still does not address the issue at hand. I would argue that if we are not to have our own forum for such things, then DIY electronics should be pulled from under the Aircraft section and made a standalone forum under RCgroups, for all categories.

the idea of a stand alone section for drones/electronics does have merit since the systems involved are not necessarily just for aircraft.

After spending a little time on the DIY Electronics forum, I found the members that contribute to that forum to be very opinionated and also seem to have a do it my way or else way about them. I like the atmosphere here on this forum and I would hope that by us building a DIY Digital Command for Marine Applications forum that we would keep the friendly atmosphere we already have.

I can understand that, since they're dealing with aircraft. I one hits something and causes property damage/physical harm, then they're up for all kinds of grief.

We're dealing with watercraft, inherently lower risk most of the time compared to what they're doing.

How about a sub-forum under DIY Electronics or under drones?

Andy,

Massey and Deckie are right, this is not what we pettitoned for and not what we want. It's for our own forum specifically relating to model boating. Besides, if you read back to my earlier posts, we got snubbed by the diy electronics members when I posted an invitation from to them.

Pete

I put that out as a possible way to placate both sides.

I saw the thread there too, but you are acting pretty thin-skinned about it. You should have seen the battle that went on in two different places over the creation of a "Balsa Builders Forum" in addition to the "Foam Builders Forum" and "Builders Workship" etc. On that I was VERY MUCH a part of the anti-forum group, and lost. I still don't see that the new forum has added anything, in fact I still believe that one was a net-loss for the community.

Just because the guys in DIY Electronics didn't jump up and down for joy doesn't mean anything. There are always folks on both sides of the issue. Push the side you believe in, but listen to the other side, they may have a valid point (to varying degrees).

Ironically I was asking about a sub orbital balloon spacecraft, using the Rpi as a controller for logging sensor readings and also providing feedback for ground tracking. With the possibility of also having the Rpi deploy a parachute at a predefined altitude to lower the recovery radius and also bring the craft back safely. My ideas didn't go over too well. I got told how the pi is too power hungry and complex for such a job... Oh well. I am still in the learning phase of this craft's development as well as a few other ideas I have.

While not a Rpi implementation, and not sub-orbital but actually orbital, the successfull ArduSAT program might be worth a look at for methods/ideas.

Deckie thanks for the support! The spacecraft is still on the list of things I would love to build and prolly will build it... but first I need to learn how to program the Pi so I can make it do what I want. Im working on that right now, I am taking a free learn how to program Python class right now.

If anyone else is interested you can find more info here

Also is the WA in your avatar for Washington State?

I'm thinking an Xbee module at basestation and in the boat:
- they are inexpensive
- have long range
- are transceivers so will communicate both ways
- will interface easily to either an rpi or arduino.

Anybody have any experience with these?
Pete
