Question on covering cockpit area
I am building a SIG Cavalier and giving it the look of a pt 19 Trainer. It will have an open cockpit. Any suggestions on how to protect and cover the wood I used for the cockpit? Will spray paint alone be enough or should I use wood stain and then paint? I don't want to use any monokote for the cockpit, but I want to have it protected. Thanks!

I would spray paint it, then just take some thinned epoxy and cover the open are. It will give it a cool look too.

Thinned epoxy first, then paint. If you paint first the epoxy will just lay on top of the paint doing very little good. Epoxy first will soak into the wood so even if the paint fails you still have protection.

A lot depends on where you place and/or point your exhaust.....If it is anywhere but pointed toward the cockpit, not a whole lot needs to be done.
