Gnome 2 Meter Electric

I couldn't find too much information on the 2 meter Gnome, other than a few mentions of it being a good flyer, so I thought I'd do a build thread and see if anyone is interested in following my progress!

I bought the plans on eBay a while back and ordered the wood from National Balsa. While I'm waiting for the wood to arrive I am going to use my scrap wood to make what parts I can.

So far I've made templates for the fuse sides, formers, dihedral and poly braces and wing ribs. I cut two plywood patterns for the inside panel ribs as there are 18 of them and they are all identical. The pics show the balsa blanks sandwiched between the ply patterns, and how they came out after sanding.

The tip panels have 6 ribs each that get smaller as they approach the tip. I used patterns cut from poster board and transferred the outlines to 1/16" balsa. Tonight I got all twelve ribs cut out and started sanding them down until the outlines are gone.

Here's some pics of my other scratch built planes. The Oly 2 was my first scratch built e sailplane. Then there was the Windfree which had a very short life, meeting its demise after the battery came out while spinning out of a thermal. The Windward is another Mark Smith design and is actually the Windfree's predecessor. Finally, an e-BOT which I finished up recently and have yet to maiden.

Tonight I finished the wing tip panel ribs, made the formers, dihedral and polyhedral braces, and the forward fuse bottom. Now I will have to wait for my balsa to get here. It hasn't shipped yet, so it will be about a week or so I'm sure. So stay tuned.

Gnome 2m Electric

Hi there,

I have been flying an electrified Gnome2m off and on for the last 5 years.
Its a really great flying model. I tend to take it with me whenever I go flying because it takes up little room and can be ready to go in minutes.
it surprises many people with its performance.

I have a Hyperion 3013-16 Outrunner on 2200-3S, with a 50A ESC.
it goes up at a rapid rate but then just floats around.

My father has a 3m version as well, this will be test flown tomorrow.
I will post some pics tomorrow.

I hope that this helps.

Dale

Dale, I'd like see some pics. I have the three meter kit, but wanted to build the two meter first. I'm curious, do you know the weight of your Gnome 2m? I wish my balsa order would arrive so I could get started on mine!

Just received an email from Balsa USA that the wood has shipped. I should be resuming the build on Friday!

Ultra Mark IV

So, while waiting for the wood to arrive for the Gnome, I've started on a kit that I received last November. It's an Ultra Mark IV from Midway models. Here's some pictures of my progress on the wing. It is under cambered and required lots of shims. To date all of my builds had wings that were virtually flat from the spar to the trailing edge. It's been a real learning experience, and amazingly it's straight. So far.
I think this sailplane is a relative of the Gnome

I don't think those spoilers will work so well when taped down.

On a serious note, that spoiler looks small to me. Much smaller than what's on the 2m Chrysalis and Miles.

Thoughts anyone?

These are 8+". I ithink it will work fine. I have bigger wings with the same approx width. It doesn't drop like a rock when you activate them. It just causes steady descent. Time will tell. I've read it's best not to disturb the airfoil too much, hence go with smaller spoilers.

Here's the Ultra's wing halves. I still need to add the wing tips and and do some serious sanding. I have decided to get the Ultra's wings all done before I resume the Gnome. The Gnome's balsa should arrive tomorrow.
