My dad flew full scale RC planes like this in the Navy back in the early 60's.
Former trainers were converted to remote control. A ground based pilot would handle the takeoff. The Dad would pull into formation and take control. He would fly his plane and the 'drone' out to sea, put it in auto pilot and them peel off to allow ship based missile testing. They almost always missed. Then he would fly back in, take it out of auto pilot, fly back to base and turn it over to ground control for the landing.
He even got written up in the base magazine when (surprisingly) the test missile actually hit the drone. When he flew in for the pickup, he saw the drone punched through the wing but still flying (in tighter circles than the auto pilot was designed to be flying). Dad radioed back that he thought he could still fly it back. He just held a bit of right stick on the way in. Saved the plane for future tests.
