If I remember correctly, each 15 degrees of bank in level flight = 1 additional G. A 90 degree knife edge is 7 Gs, at least
I wonder how many Gs the turn at the bottom of the DS pattern is?

The g's can vary but testing has shown greater than 60gs on a high speed flight if memory serves.

Theory says g's can approach 100. Slow planes will not get that high, more like 20 G's.

It's not only g's, gps is not 100% accurate, so in a straight line it may give a good reading, but doing relatively tight circuits, it could miss the exact point at which you turn and calculate a completely different speed. If you're doing straight-line speed over say 200m It could be fairly accurate, but radar guns still the best

I recently installed an Frsky smart port GPS into an old plank I have. Only flew it once on the front side. I had my Taranis to read out the speed on a momentary switch trigger. From my limited time, it seems the speed readout was not terribly reliable - seemed to lag behind and be more an averaging speed. I am more interested in it as a locator than a speed recorder.

Wow, congratulations Tim
Not the easiest place to fly either, especially the extraordinary landing requirements!

P.S. If we grow up, we're dead.

Well done guys !!!
That looks a seriously difficult place to fly and land, makes the acheivement even more amazing.
I imagine launching and walking to the spot where you ds isnt easy either.

When Spencer pushed the WR up to 468mph with the K100 back in early 2011, he had a datalogger on board - you can see the files on this page:
http://www.rcgroups.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1382898

Essentially it was nudging 90 g's.

I wonder if we could have a stock, off the shelf DLG DS record class??? Would be interesting if 100mph could be broken with a stock, un-modded DLG

In the last 3 days we had our national gliders meeting here in Brazil at Belo Horizonte-MG. Usually, there are some thermal planes and slopers but this year people was introduced to ds groove , Thats really good to make it popular and see more speeds, sites and ds seekers around here. I see a lot of potential sites in this City and also some pilots to explorer it, it's just a matter of time!
Moreover was my first speed with the blank 40, we had 4 of them at the hill and people really like it....
Also we had a F3F open class task, very interesting!

Special thanks to organizers guys from planabh
