Tiny-X Construction Thread

I have started to put together a Tiny-X from Toddīs Models. Since there was some interest for a Construction Thread in the "TinyX goes Vertical!"-thread I decided to document my work while I go.

I can tell you already now that the Tiny-X is a delight to build. All wood parts is laser cut and the fit is great, just great! Todd shure knows how to use his CAD-software!

So, what do you get for your hard earned bucks then? Well, no full colour cardbord box, thatīs for shure.

A plastic bag with a rolled plan and if you look from the side you can see that there is some wood boards inside.

When you open the bag and empty it on the table you find a small bag of bits and hardware, some balsa sticks, a carbon tube and five sheets of beautifully laser cut balsa.

The bits and pieces-bag. More laser cut parts, mylar hinges, velcro, 1/2A Wheels from Sig and micro control horns and mini E/Z connectors from Du-Bro. Quality stuff in other words.

But I donīt like the wheels, they are all plastic. I whant light foam wheels. Will exchange them.

The construction starts with the horizontal stab and the elevator. I covered the plan with food wrap so the CA-glue whould not stick to it.

The stab and elevator is built up by laser cut parts and 1/8 sq balsa. The later must be cut to correct length with a hobby knife.

The fin is built up the same way. The Tiny-X has no side rudder.

But mine will...

I split the fins main strip in two so I got a rudder with a large balance area.

The open part of the balance area was cut down 1/8" and a 1/8" sq. balsa piece was glued in place.

The edges that will form the joint between rudder and fin has been planed down from one side. I will not use the supplied mylar hinges. I prefer using the covering as a hinge on small models.

(The gap between parts has been exaggerated for clarity)

The ailerons is built up just like the fin and the elavator. Just put all pieces together and add a small drop of thin CA to every joint.

Two ailerons made in less than 15 mins.

Joints in close-up. This clearly shows the laser cut precision.

Very pleasant to build!

The ailerons should also be hinged with mylar hinges. But covering hinges is air tight and it is easier to plane the ailerons edge with a balsa razor than sanding them round with a sand paper.

(And it is easier to clean up the mess to...)

Ooops! Production-flaw!! The laser beam has not cut through the balsa sheet properly. Probably because this end of the balsa sheet was little harder than the rest of the sheets.

But it was easy to fix with a hobby knife.

Time to assemble the wing. The construction notes says clearly that glue should NOT be used - yet.

Great fit, only little force is used to put pieces togheter, tight fit, but not more.

Wings center ribs, landing gear mounting plate and fuselage carbon tube mounting plates. Still no glue used.

All ribs in place and only glued to the wings trailing edge.

It was a little tricky to line up the trailing edge straight against the ribs before glue was applied. I have a suggestion how to make it easier, read on.
