I put an amp meter on the cdrom motor and it's only pulling 3 amps. Looks like it could pull a lot bigger prop, maybe even a Piccolo MR?

Sounds like a perfict EDP50 brushless replacement motor.Rewrap it to 28 turn of 30gage and you have a 3s pack brushless micro heli tail motor replacement and at less weight.Matt

Hey Matt,
I stopped by a local computer store and bought a couple of used CDROM's today, one has grey magnets and ball bearings!

Great find,if its about 16grams you can safely pull 12 to 14 amps with a 4x4 prop with that motor.About speed 400 power.Goes great on a 6oz mini wing.About 100mph.Give it a shot.Matt

Here we go, home made Piccolo Brushless Power

Gleened a nice CDROM motor today and have started to see if I can convert it for use in my Piccolo. Here are the parts after removing from the drive and removing the old windings.

Making a longer shaft

The bearings and motor could be used as-is with a small mount fabricated out of wood, but I need a longer shaft since the power will be transmitted out the bottom to a gear. Here are the parts for the shaft.

I had to turn down the bearing tube so as to have a nice fit of the larger tubing. I chucked it up in my drillpress and with a small file, ground it down until I had a snug fit. The smaller tubing fits snuggly into the larger, a 8mm bearing fits perfect into the smaller tube.

Assemble tube

I line it all up with the shaft and bearings, and silver soldered it together.
