New Speed 400 racer, Whisper.

After talking about racing some speed 400 in the Vancouver area, I decided to have a go at designing my own. Here's what I came up with. I call it the Whisper just because it's so quiet in the air. Construction is all wood and great fun to fly. You can check out the details at my website. Anyone wanna race

That's a beautiful piece of work! I bet she flies really well, too!

That looks Hot, nice planform and good proportions. Is there room inside for 9-10 2/3A cells despite the higher wingloading?

If by 2/3a cells you mean 600 ae's or he1100's yes it would be easy to get 10 in there. I have 8 in the fuse now and you can see the room left over. Heck you could probabably get 12 in there if you tried. The speed 400 wouldn't last long though.

Couldn't find many details on your site Roger. What's the wing span, area, weight, etc.

Hi Dave

The Whisper weighed 4 ounces framed without paint or components. When it was all done with 8 600 ae's and a 10 amp speed control the model weighed 16.2 ounces. I did get a little carried away with the paint and finishing however. Now the Whisper has a 30 amp Great planes speed control and 8 KAN 1100's. I had to change the speed control because the wires were melting. It gained 2 ounces! Yikes! I do like the longer flight times though. I'm going to get a 15 amp speed control soon for it and that should save some weight. Wingarea is 150 squares on the nose so in case I get back to Calgary this summer I can come racing with you guys. I used to fly at the Airdrie club. Wingspan is 33 inch's

I seem to be having troubles uploading the new files to my website. There should be a new heading on the left called "Whisper". When you click on it the page should open to a single picture of the Whisper and a description below that. It looks like it is working now for me. Could someone check it out and let me know. Thanks

It's working for me also.

What are the KAN 1100's you mention? I'm using KAN 950's... are your cells something different?

The local hobby shop just got them in. I was the first person to buy them from him so they must be a pretty new product. They are the same size as the 950's just more capacity. He said they were good for 25 amp discharge rates.

Hmm... I've seen some "new and improved" KAN 950's that Steve Neu has been testing... but I haven't heard of any 1100's. Interesting.

I had a great weekend with the Whisper. My new Hyper 400 showed up from Aircraft World in the unbelievably quick time of 5 days. Simply amazing, thank you David! This motor brought the speed up and was an improvement. However the real fun began today when the Hyper 400 was taken out and a Speed 480 was installed. Now this model really goes! Holy smokes, what a difference!

After Draken's wing failure on Saturday I was a little nervous about the strength in my wing. I did several dives from altitude with no problems, not even a hint of flutter. The allup weight is now 18.6 ounces but it handles just fine. Hope the weather is good tomorrow, I can get some more flights in before work.

What About using a Castle creations Pixie 20AMP ESC? . You should lose some weight there. It will be nice to see the Whisper in Chilliwack this weekend....you ARE going to be there right?

Hey Kush!

Yes, I could use some smaller equipment like a Pixie 20 and the Hitec 555 could be replaced also. As for the event in Chilliwack, yes I'll be there with the Whisper and the Aggressor and perhaps a GWS Zero. Just checked the weather forecast and Sunday is looking like the better day. 80% chance of light rain on Saturday. Hopefully it comes around for us. See you there.
