Brushless Walkera UFO possible !!!!
it has been very quite in here .... well
there should be more action after we have the green light for the possibility of the opto- isolator brushless conversion for the walkera controller board ... and since it is the cheapest controller board available with 3 piezo gyros ... this brings the minimum charge of a brushless quad to very low levels that were not available before .... Get A T-REX 450 or an E-flight 400 Belt driven and you are good to go

How difficult is this conversion to brushless for a dim-witted non electronics conversant idiot? And what would you estimate the rough cost? Cheers Ted |

From FarnellUK total cost of components for the conversion works out at £13.61 plus the cost of a small piece of veroboard Then you add on the cost of motors, frame etc. which I think you probably know all about anyway I don't expect it to be difficult at all - theres no programming involved. This is one I'm certainly going to have a go at Cheers Frank |

@Ted,
If you are familiar with the Old Man Mike's DF Opti-isolator mod, that is what I did to get brushless on this board, the original XUFO chinabaord and the Xbase. I will attach the basic plan that is similar to all these conversions. I have tested them and they work. The Walkera board does not have as good a heading hold as the others in this mod. I have not flown it enough yet to see if that is something that can be tweaked or adjusted. I used the OMM recommended Turnigy Plush 10A ESC's and the Towerpro 2410-09 brushless motors, both from United Hobbies and Medusa Research Opto-isolators. Have fun! @Jim ... from what I see in the photos ... replacing or disabling the walkera RX is not a must as in the case of the china board...so I still can use the integrated walkera R/X
regarding the mods or tweaks to enhance the heading hold .. I am looking forwarding to it and I hope you can do something about it like you did with Draganflyer experimental board gyro V-out 100K pot mod.... Good Luck Jim Khaled |

Khaled,
You do not have to replace the original RX for this brushless mod, but it can only be used with the Walkera PCM type TX. That said, it is an easy soldering task to remove the RX and then wire up a 4-6 channel replacement receiver to the Walkera flight control board's contacts in order to use a standard PPM TX. Although the Walkera board has ports for 6 channels, only 4 are used for flight. On my board channels 5 and 6 servo connections did not work, and on inspection where missing parts on the board for those channels. They were originally intended to be a camera trigger and channel 5 aux connection. Cheers, Jim Quote:

@Ted, I really recommend that you simulate any solder job that you feel it may be difficult for you on old computer parts ... it will help you very much and gives you much confidence in your soldering abilities ...
learn to use the flux ,, it accelerate the melting of the solder and governs where it should flow ,, use just a tiny bit with a tooth pick .... Learn to Tin the solder tip and make it shiny and clean ... Tinning the solder tip or the parts to be soldered is simply covering it with solder ... using flux will help you very much ....by just a tiny bit ... too much flux may cause undesirable results causing other electronic parts to be unsoldered ... sure you don't wanna do that .... you may also want to file the solder tip for cleaning or reducing the diameter in case you will work on the tiny legs of a transistor ,, so you don't cause any short circuits here are some links and posts that will help you out http://www.rcgroups.com/forums/showt...ux#post9806697 But believe me the brushless mod is very easy to do and you will even feel more happier because you built it yourself ... and it doesn't require high soldering skills I am sure you will be able to do it .. Let us know your progress ![]() Khaled |

@Jim could you please revise this detailed wiring diagram for the Berg 4L and the walkera board
Thank you Khaled Last edited by khaled_abobakr; Jun 09, 2008 at 09:15 AM. |

Khaled,
Your slide looks good for the Berg wiring to the Walkera board. Good that you caught that channel 2 is the pitch (Ele) and channel 1 is roll (Ail). The previously posted Graupner diagram is specific for that RX and mode 1 TX, so those channels are reversed in that setup. Cheers, Jim Quote:

Hi Jim I must have missed it. Were you able to make the walkera board work?
I still have this one over here that I would like to make Fly. I have a Futaba 7cap, it can do PPM and PCM. Which Rx did you find that worked on the walkera board? will a Futaba radio do the job? This walkera has been modified, but I now have the Isolators to build the brushless conversion. Have you been able to make the Brushless conversion work on the walkera board? I see you have, so How does it fly, what radio do you use? Are you still using the Stock Rx with some other radio? For some reason, my walkera will fly for a minute, then just loose power and fall. I don't know if this is a fault of the board, Rx, or the FET's I used to control the larger motors. Any ideas? Last edited by MadSmasher; Jun 13, 2008 at 07:58 AM. |
