@StudioRS: Thanks Thompson!
Next up-now to create some scale-ish landing gear doors to improve the looks of the front wheel... @4all: I flew my FMS ASW28 and ST DG-1000 today. I was wondering how similar or dis-similar you guys find these planes to fly??? (Assuming the ST ASW flies similar to the FMS model?) My thoughts- While they both fly very nice, the ASW is faster and it seems I have to be carefull not to turn too fast or stall when turning as it will tipstall easily. Maybe i still have to get used to the ASW? The ASW also has a faster & more powefull climb rate- almost to the point of looping backwards if not carefull. The spoilerons I added to both(55-65%flaps on a DX6i) are not dramatic and maybe helped reduce its loftyness(word?) upon landing. Your Thoughts??? |

Hmmm. I would think that the podded motor on the DG 1000 would help limit the pitch up compared to the ASW 28. It can be a problem with T-tails because the lift of the wings exceeds the stability of the tail at low speeds. With a botched launch one can even run into a "deep stall" where the T-tail is blanked by the wing. I've done it twice with my ST ASW 28 but suffered no damage aside from a bent prop shaft. The cure is to make sure that one launches level or even a bit nose down and keeps the nose low until one has sufficient airspeed. With a good launch it's no more difficult to control than any other motor glider.
The ST ASW 28 will tip stall easily but it's so light that it recovers by itself almost instantly. Adding dihedral helps one make smoother turns. I also added wooden ailerons and sanded a bit of washout into them but, mostly, I've just gotten more familiar with the plane. Any scale glider with a high aspect ratio will tip stall. It's just an inherent trait but the FMS ASW might be a bit more well behaved based on what I've read. I have found that mine will land in a much smaller space by using spoilerons. It also allows one to slow down a bit more without dropping a wing since it essentially adds wash out. In fact, I can make "harrier landings" with a bit of a head wind. It sounds like the FMS is a better plane out of the box while the ST needs some work. The stock aileron linkages are nearly worthless but, after adding the balsa ailerons and direct pushrods it flies beautifully and even performs nice rolls. The FMS has a bit higher wing loading but, since it's bigger, it doesn't sound like it suffers in soaring performance. |

Thanks Peter for your thoughts. Sounds like you've made allot of improvements to your plane. The FMS model has the dihedral built-in to the stock setup.
The DG has much more upturned wing ends than the ASW. Maybe that reduces its tipstall tendencies? Wow- I like that "harrier" style landings achievable with your spoileron setup. Sounds powerfull. Maybe I'll keep increasing the movement and more experimenting... Thanks Again! |

ASW-28 pics
Hi,
I made some trim changes to my FMS ASW-28 to help with visibility. In addition to the red tips and tail I also painted the bottom of the wings and stab black. I really like the way it flies. I get 4 motor runs (20-30 sec) on a 1300 3s pack and usually have 3.9-3.96V after 15-20 minutes of flying. Moves quickly through the sky but indicates thermals well. I also added spoilerons for landing which slows it down and counters tip stalls. I'm using a Hitec Optic 6 Tx with an FrSky module and Rx. Ray |

Ray@Kostuk- Ditto... Looks great with the red trim. Nice!
I'm getting the same 4 lifts with my 1300ma batteries too. The ASW-28 also makes a great whisssssshhhhhh sound when you make a fast flyby without the engine. Very neat. |

Hi, Steve. As far as I know Banana Hobby is the only source for the FMS ASW 28 in the U.S.. Unfortunately it has been a big seller and they've jacked up the price. One could save a good bit on price with the smaller ones from ST Models or HobbyKing but they are of a lower overall quality and need some work to fly well. The ST soars very well because it's nice and light but the motor and aileron linkages just aren't very good and the control surfaces, at the very least, need to be stiffened up. Now that I have the ST ASW28 dialed in it suits my purposes but I'm going to glass and wood for my next scale sailplane.

Yeah, that. They were selling for $99.90 & suddenly took a quantum leap to $145.90. BUT! There's a 'trick' you can pull to get back near the former CoA price. BH has a 'Free Shipping' on orders of $149+ deal going on right now. Just add some small $4 item you might or might not need but can use to your order. IE, just below the ad [http://www.bananahobby.com/asw28-rc-...366-prd1.html] they show 8 alkaline AAs for $4.90. Shipping on mine to near-Atlantic coast was $35, so with the current "deal" you'll in effect pay only ~$14 more than the former price. But I'd jump now; BH has been especially notorious lately about ending promotions early. Plus anytime there's a deal going on, stock tends to disappear quickly. Your call. AFA alternative domestic sources....since FMS dumped Nitro Planes/HobbyPartz, afraid BH is it! http://fmsmodel-usa.com/t-about.aspx |

Here's the link to my post about the ST ASW 28 after modification. I still think the FMS version is of better overall quality but I don't know if it actually soars any better. If I were to start over from scratch I would just avoid bending the prop shaft and stick with the original motor with a better ESC. Feel free to ask any questions on the ST thread if I have left anything out.

I have an FMS-ASW28 as well. I had a tip stall due to a bad launch and broke my propeller shaft. Did you replace the motor? How did you extract the original? The back of the firewall have the screw side of 4 wood screws. Thanks for the help.
I'm just getting started. |
