Or if you like, send the heli to myself or Pete and we will fix this issue. First do as Pete recommended and post some pictures. Once the mesh is good these pinions should not strip unless you crash. When the mesh is off or main gear movement is present....even a fast spool-up or abrupt rudder input can strip the conical.

Hey povern - did you check for binding in the tail like I mentioned? Did you end up trimming that tab inside the gearbox? It still sounds like the tail is loading up and stressing the tail gear.

Be sure to post pics!

Dumb question: you don't have your gyro reversed, thus causing the servo to jam one direction when it tries to correct and lock the tail?

You should be able to remove the tail boom and spin the conical with your fingers. The tail blades should spin freely and coast to a stop. This is how we test the tail box friction and drag before installing the completed tail assembly. As posted by RadioHead, trim the back tab in the Y0262 where the screw goes into the tail box half if there is binding. LAheli already adds a slope to this tab which decreases binding.

Then follow the guidelines Pete and everyone else has posted including:
  • eliminating any main gear movement by making sure the Y0420 Delrin is installed and the collar prevents any up and down main gear movement
  • conical does not extend to far out from front boom mount (this would allow flex. Trim Y0175 tail drive shaft as required.)
  • mesh has ZERO lash and Y0555 collar does not touch main gear (only teeth make contact.)
  • Main gear spins level with no wobble. Adjust (2) hex screws that attach free-wheel housing to adjust main gear tracking.
  • Finally - spin main gear clock-wise, and whole assembly including tail blades should spin freely. It should be glassy smooth.

Picked up my 520 today... I can't wait to get it mounted!

povern, Doug said you were in the store today asking about Protos stuff a few minutes before I stopped in... next time you should bring your Ricco and I'll swing by, I only work two miles away. Or if you want you could drop it off and I'll pick it up and look it over.
