Gyroguru, the big friction drive wheel is made of a scraped Honey Bee King II drive wheel. I have removed the one way bearing and the cogs with a lathe. I have also fitted the wheel with a rubber seal to increase the friction. I have used a drilling-milling machine and a lathe to make the rest of the parts from scratch. The motor for the pre-rotator is a Speed 280.

do you have the pre rotator motor on a remote switch, or is it a mechanical switch on the model?

Derk, no and no. The rotor is started in this way:

A PIC12F675 microcontroller measures the control signals of the servos that control the rotor. If one of the control signals is close to one millisecond, and the other is close to two milliseconds (both servo arms are in their upper most position) the microcontroller starts to send pulses with about 60% duty cycle at about 200Hz. These pulses are sent to the input of an IPS031 power switch, which is connected in serial with the Speed 280 motor that spins up the rotor. I have programmed the microcontroller with assembler in MPLAB IDE which can be downloaded for free from Microchip.

Very nice project Axbri.
When I first looked at the pre-rotator motor mount, I thought you had used a spring loaded mount and a micro switch. Just push the rotor assy aginst the motor and it would start. Your setup should inspire some more per-rotator setups.
Thanks for your posts.

Hi,

Axel, Thats a pretty sophisticated Pre-rotator. I use an external held motor.

Great little gyro you've built there.

Doug

PS: Im only 17 as well.

Hello appy2day and Doug,

It is obvious that the pre-rotator mechanism can be made in many different ways.

Doug, I suppose you have summer now? At my place the sun just barley rises above the horizon. Do you use the tail elevator? Does the flybar help to stabilise the autogyro?

Regards, Axel

Axel,

Yeah its summer now here, But I live on the coast, making it windy neally all day, every day.

No, no tail elevator. My gyro features a full swash plate head like a helicopters meaning the flybar controls the rotors, giving roll and pitch control. It must give some increase in rotor stability but I dont know exactly how much it would be.
