Why did you try to send noobs to subs or motors on a wild goose chase?
What is so controversial about the numbers of cables to each phase and the winding resistance that it needs to be a secret?

One More Time

I guess I'll have to repeat one more time -

On another board you stated - "I have this design of the electronics and batteries figured out with the help of VanTech" when asked how you intended getting power, etc. between your 3 WTCs. And your answers were somewhat cryptic. Care to elaborate?

Skip,

I'm thinking perhaps he meant Vantec a supplier of batteries and other computer accessories.

Roedj -

You're probably right but, in reality, it's more of a mechanical problem than electrical/electronic. I just don't see any reason why he'll share just so much and then no more. Perhaps he didn't think of that?

Based on what John posted up on the CNC zone forum yesterday-

'I have been looking at the Allied Motion CM-900 brushless hollow shaft servo encoder motors for driving screw shafts on 3" diameter x 12" length 1,000ml piston ballast tanks for rov submarines. The water pressure inside the piston is 10psi and the total piston travel should be less than 30 seconds. The motor will have forward, reverse and position memory. Has anyone had experience with these types of motors ?'

http://www.opticalencoder.com/hollow...-encoders.html

Basically a large brushless motor with an optical quadrature encoder built in.

Very nice pieces of kit, but at eye watering prices if purchased off the shelf, and there is absolutely no way you need the precision of a quadrature encoder for accurate ballast control. If you're having them built to a custom spec by a manufacturer, then I guess you are purchasing them new? How much?

I have some little 4 watt maxon motors with a 36:1 planetary gearbox. These are swiss-made, with 5-pole armatures and a fully ballraced gearbox with metal gears. They make very little noise in operation (what can best be described as a low purr).

They're about 3/4" diameter by about 2" long (with gearbox) and weigh about 1 1/2 ounces.

They wind about 350 RPM at 24 volts and seem to be unstoppable, torque rating is in the region of 34-35 oz-in.

They cost me about three quid each off of ebay, and these sort of motors crop up on a regular basis. A proportional control board for piston tanks costs about £40-50, or you can grow your own for about half that, add a pound or two for micro switches, wiring, diodes etc.

Now I wouldn't use these on a 3.5" tank, they're a tad on the small side. For respectable dive times of, say 15 seconds, then a 20-25 watt motor would be a better bet.

Baa!
As I suspected,a gearbox will be required in addition to a worm drive because the custom 900 is only 480mNm at rated.
125 lb or over 500N at 10lb per square inch.

Thanks,Subculture.Perhaps you can find the CM-900 equivalent at a computer surplus supplier cause I'm not even going to try/
