Menez Mickael, bro an Ankou, western Brittany

Degemer mad war menez Mickael! welcome at Saint michel de Braspart

Hello Guys,

those pictures date back to last friday morning. I had to drive to western Brittany for my job, that gave me a good reason to get up (very) early to drive to the "mountains" . I shot the pictures as soon as the light was sufficient. I did two flights, with an interval of 30minutes, to get a better light. It worthed it. By chance, the wind was blowing in the good direction, I did most of the pictures slope soaring

This cute little chapel had been built circa 1650, the mountain is 380m high, and from the top of that place can be seen one of the best landscape of Brittany, you can even see the sea by clear skies...not really those conditions that day, but that weather fits better to the local mood and tales: the lake which can be seen, among the marshes, is named "Yeun Elez" and is...one of the two entrances...of the world of the Deads..(don't ask me where is the second one) .It is "an Ankou" country, a very tall and thin man, dressed in black, wearing a cape, a scythe in his hand, whose job is:" worker "of the Death...if you ever walk around this area, in the early morning or in the late afternoon...or worse, at night... and hear the noise of his cart....waouh, something rather bad may happen to you...Believe it or not: a few years ago, I spent a full afternoon slope soaring on a nearby mountain, Tuchenn Kador, I left the top of the mountain at dusk, alone, for a 45mns walk....well, that is incredible how your brain can "work" in those twilight conditions...at the very end, I hurried up......to the local pub

here are the pics

Yeun Elez, the entrance of the kingdom of the deads...Brrrr

Tuchenn Gador, (the butte of the chair, or throne, in Briton) a bloody good soaring site with easterly wind...but if you leave the place late, take earcaps, to avoid hearing "wik ha wak" the noise of An Ankou's cart, which needs a drop of lubricating oil on its axle

d'ar wech all!

cheers

What a beautiful place to fly and what a quaint little chapel. Watch out for the "Grim Reaper" Beautiful pictures and a great history lesson.

Holy *?$%# !! Magical ! Otherworldly ! Such interesting hues and light. You work hard to get results and man, does it pay off. So very beautiful Olivier. Glad you survived the ordeal of 10 meter "mountains" to bring us these!

.....What's that behind you-tall,dark,thin

Cheers

I first heard about the Ankou legend in a Spirou adventure. Great photo subject
for November (le mois des morts) indeed.
BTW, I was wondering if there is a tradition that coincides with Halloween in Brittany since Brittany a Celtic country ?

Great shots, must be a wonderful place there!
My favorite is the fourth pic, it combines so beautifully a lot of different pastel colors.

no matter how spooky your story is, you always find the same sort of a happy ending

Thank you my Friends!

For sure it is a magical place, whenever you walk or drive in that area, it never looks the same...even under the mist, the drizzle or rain, it remains impressive, plus all that tales related to the area...

Bolter, [quote]....What's that behind you-tall,dark,thin /QUOTE] Isn't that Batman???

Gwelan, that Spirou album is one of the best according to me. Did you notice that the story happens precisely in the place where I took the pictures. The lake in the Yeun Elez is the lake of Brennilis (Bernilis in the book). The nuclear plant has been dismantled now a days. If you carefully look at the lanscape drawn in the book, you may recognise the pictures I took. The houses are exactly the ones that can be seen in the surroundings. Fournier did a sharp recco before drawing the book...and l'Ankou is so funny in that comic, here are samples of the book

Norbert, after the effort comes the recomfort and when I go soaring in the area (Tuchenn Gador), there is a wonderful little crêperie in a farmhouse in the very vincinity...yum yum, tasty traditionnal salted or sweet pancakes for bargain

cheers to you all!

These drawings brought back some good souvenirs from my Spirou years.
Thank you so much Olivier for these ones and (yet again) for your special shooting over Broons.
