I only got the bottom half of the box thought they will probably be plain white with a page size label on top and on one end, just like the T-45 and L-39 boxes. I don't believe that I took pictures of how the parts are packed in the box however (and it's too late for that now). The contents of the kit (pre-assembly) can be seen in post #142:

http://www.rcgroups.com/forums/showp...&postcount=142

The struts depicted in that post are not included, the pictures came from R&D. I believe that the prototypes are complete and the tooling for the first production run of the struts is being worked on.

Hey Joe,

I want one too. Just don't know how long I can wait. I'm painting all my jets in bright colors now so I can see them.

Will the green/white Viperjet be released anytime soon? Is that option coming later? I think the colors look great, I will probably make that my next project (after I finish the T-45) if it ends up being mass produced.

Cheers,

Sapac Viper Jet Build Thread Post 2 of ???

OK, time for another build thread post. Today I will be covering the installation of the retractable landing gear.

First the main wing retracts. I started by marking the cutouts based on the laser etching on the wing skins. By shining a flashlight from the root of the wing towards the landing gear mount you can clearly see where you need to cut the retract gear opening. I marked this with a water based pen and then cut away the covering and balsa wood sheeting with a hobby knife.
Once the opening is cut you will see that the pilot holes for the mounting screws are laser etched in the mounts. I reinforced the mounts with some thin CA, attached a section of air line to the retract unit and screwed it into place with 2.5m X 10mm screws.
I tested the units to make sure that they moved freely but I did not bend and mount the struts at this time, I will be doing that after the wing is attached to the body and I have the completed wheel well available to measure and test. To finish of the main retracts I covered the opening in the wing with the supplied PVC squares.

Next I moved to the nose wheel retracts. The production models will have the nose gear opening etched into the fiberglass body but in my case I had to measure it out and mark it with a pen. Once the opening was marked I cut it out with a rotary cuter. From the inside of the cockpit I cut away the bulkhead that held the opening to the fuselage.
Next I dry fitted the servo and the retract unit to drill pilot holes. These pilot holes were also reinforced with thin CA. I attached a hose to the retract unit and mounted it and the servo in location. I like to use a metal gear servo for the steering as it receives a lot of direct vibration from the landing gear and will avoid premature stripping of the gears.
I assembled the steering and measured the distance from the servo arm to the steering arm in order to rough in the pull-pull steering. I like to assemble this outside of the plane and crimp one side. Once I had that complete I place it all in position, tighten the un-crimped side and crimp it. Finally I tested the retract action and the steering.

Last step in the installation of the retractable landing gear is the mounting of the actuation mechanism. I pre-assembled the valve with a section of hose on each side and a T-fitting at the end of each hose; this makes it easier to complete the plumbing later as there are fewer connections to be made where things are tight. The retract actuator valve and the servo have mounting spots available below the ducts through the fan unit access hatch. Installation is simple; screw them into position and bend up a control rod.
The air tank doesn’t have a bulkhead slot prepared for it so I chose to mount it to one of the inlet ducts using hot glue. I completed as much of the plumbing as I could but final testing will have to wait until the wings have been mounted and the main gear retract units have been connected.

More to come in a few days,

- Birger

Very nice. Is the wire for the gear 3mm or 1/8? Are you going to use the oleo struts on this?

The wires are actually 2.5mm diameter, this is the same diameter on the wire struts, the retract supplied unbent wire struts and the adapter pins for the Scale struts and oleos.

As for the scale struts, I'm hoping to get some eventually but so far there is only one set in the world that fit the Viper Jet. They are gearing up for production as we speak and they should hopefully be shipping via air-mail in a couple of weeks.

It probably goes without saying that the Viper struts are different from the T-45 and the L-39 struts. The Viper struts are Sz180-v where the T-45 and L-39 struts are Sz180.
