10mm carbon fiber wing rod
Anyone know of a good source for carbon rod? Trying to save 12oz on my 2.2 meter Fox by replacing the heavy steel rod.

If you decide to use carbon, metal wing rod tube will cause a failure eventually! A small nick in the carbon at the seam between wing and fuse will allow the carbon to break beautifully. IMHO
Jim PS: try (google) CST and ACP for carbon rods |

You can also use 7075 T6 aluminum rod. I have it bulk and can cut either .375" or .5" diameter rod to length. You can calculate the weight of various dimensional metals for comparison here: http://www.bostoncenterless.com/weightcalc.htm
.375" x 12" 7075 T6 = 0.1341 lbs. x 16 = 2.15 oz. .375" x 12" steel = 0.376 lbs. x 16 = 6.016 oz. .375" x 12" carbon = 0.073 lbs. x 16 = 1.164 oz. You will avoid the real problem that Jim mentions, save some money vs. carbon and you will not be able to bend the 7075 T6 at that dimension unless you hit a tree at full speed. Tom |

We picked some of this up at Icare a couple of weeks ago.
He doesn't show any on his website (http://www.icare-rc.com/index.htm), but you may want to try contacting him. Gudmund |

Which manufacturer put a 12 oz steel rod in a 2.2m plane? According to Tom's info , the 10mm rod must be at least 60 cm long!!

The MDM-1 Fox by Royal-model which was purchased from Sal at NESAIL. The rod is about 14" and weighs 9oz and not 12. Still a lot nonetheless.

Fox is an aerobatic sailplane, so a little extra weight should not hurt it. Weight = energy.
