Whistler

I bought a used pylon racer / hotliner called Whistler off the boards and will try to maiden this baby early tomorrow morning.

The plane is a Czech design http://www.freeair.cz/ENGLISH/Whistler-AJ.html and some other build logs/discussions of this plane are here:

http://www.rcgroups.com/forums/showt...light=whistler
http://www.rcgroups.com/forums/showthread.php?t=578110
Reviews are mixed. Seems like people either hate it, or love it. No in-betweens.

The guy who had this plane before me wasn't a very good builder. He cut a hole at the top of the fuselage to put the elevator servo in. Looks like he forgot that this was supposed to be a high performance plane. Also, in one of the images you can see the two spots he marked on the wing for the CG at approx 73mm from the leading edge. This position indicated in the manual is wrong as indicated by other flyers. So I marked the new position of the CG, and it is around 55mm. I really don't know if the guy before me was able to fly it.

This is my first fast plane, and I hope all goes well. More after the maiden...

It's aliveeeeeee !

Yes, she flies! Maiden went well. Actually the second attempt at launch. So, here is how it went:
Early morning, 8 AM, bright and shiny Florida skies, just a hint of wind. Checked controls and headed towards some tall grass (which is about 6 feet tall, no kidding). Since I have never done a hand launch in my life (except for my Swift wing, which weighs a fourth of this one), I chucked it into the tall weeks. It dipped, and went straight in. Didn't know what to make of it, so went ahead with the launch. Half throttle and pushed it up too high. STALL !!! Quickly cut off throttle. It dipped it's left wing and came down ... luckily into some knee high weeds. Quick check...nothings broken or loose. Time to try again. Second launch. This time at 3/4th throttle, again, launch was too steep. It started to stall. I gave it full gas and full up! Damnit! The plane tried to correct my mistake by attempting to go vertical but started slowing down. I quickly corrected elevator, and it zoomed away!

I had noticed that the elevator was in slight up position at launch, but didn't bother correcting. Now it was causing the plane to balloon up at low speeds. Full down trim was applied, and she started floating around at 1/2 throttle. The elevator control I devised is fluttering. This happened when I tried to pull out of a steep dive at high speed. Need to glue the pushrod to the side of the fuselage. A few clicks of right aileron were required. Other than that, the only issue is that the plane noses up a bit as I open throttle. This causes the plane to stall. So I was adjusting the trim quite a bit as I switched from 1/2 throttle to off. This plane floats around real nice. Not sure if it can thermal as it is quite heavy (I think). Excellent for putting around the sky. I haven't gone full throttle yet, but so far this maiden was excellent and the plane holds great promise. I just love the lack of sound when it's putting around the sky. Overall a very positive experience.

Hot Daing!!!...

Rex..Try and put somemore down angle in the Motor ...that should stop that Pulling up when full Throttle...that always helped me on several planes...I just add a washer or two to the Bottom Mount and git that angle agoin.....once its achieved...you should be able to rip azzz on a level attack....i always guess at mine...I hold the plane out level in front of me..and make sure i can see a downward attack in the Front shaft of the Motor...I'm sure they're Precise ways of doin this..but...it works for me...seems they want a 4.5 degree angle i think...Maybe...Kinda...hehe...anyways..Good for you...I'm gonna git me one fixed up in the near future.....Take care Pard...Billy....

rexnuktia ... how's the plane going? What setup is in there, inc servo's? Looked at this for a long time and can now get one. Not a lot of feedback on it so I'm a bit unsure and think it might be rated as a poor plane? Thoughts plz.

Hi Feefo, this is my setup:

Motor: Feigao 3808412S
ESC: Castle Thunderbird 36
Battery: 3s 1600 Zippy
Prop : 4.1 X 4.1
Servos : HS 81s for ailerons, and Hextronic HXT900 for elevator

I've been out of the country for a while, so didn't get a chance to fly. The plane is actually quite good, although a bit heavy. Please remember, I have never flown fast planes before, so what is heavy to me, might be light to an experienced pylon racer.
Yes, a few people have rated this plane poorly, but a few have also given it high marks. I fall into the latter group. Currently I am modifying the elevator pushrod on this plane because at high speed, when I give too much elevator, it starts fluttering ! Other than that, my only concern is that it comes in very fast for landing. Too fast for me in fact!

Guys, I bought this plane used on the boards a couple of months ago. It was bought on a whim as a first introduction to fast planes. I'll try to play around with it for a month, and then if I decide I don't like speed planes, might put this one up for sale I guess I get bored quickly ...
